    Default Retained Salary Arguement

    Hey All,

12 team Keeper Salary Cap league.

Looking for outside opinions on Kessel's Retained cap.

Should the Kessel owner own an 8mil cap hit (total)
    OR
Should they own the 6.8mil cap hit (minus toronto retained 1.2mil).

    8Mil Arguement:
The cap is still in the league on an active player. Thus, players should be basd on their total league cap hit

    6.8mil Arguement:
If Kessel went to any other team they would be paying him 6.8mil. Thus, owners of Kessel should only pay the new price.

    Thanks for all replies!

    Welcome to the forums.

I think his full salary should move with him. It can get confusing if you are trying to always adjust salaries after retained salary.

I believe this is what you are asking.

If this is a new league starting now... I'd go with 6.8m. But his 'new' cap hit is going into its 3rd year in Pitts... so not so new anymore. There are several players with retained salary in the league, what is the league doing with Luongo Fla & Mike Smith in Cgy?

    Thanks Lucafen4,

It's a long time league. We just converted to a salary cap league 2 years ago, so we are still working out kinks.

Currently all contracts that have retained values are going at the current team's cap hit. However, it was brought to our attention this offseason and voting seems pretty divided.

Kessel's full cap hit of $8 million should be used for any team he is on. His NHL cap hit is $8 million, regardless of the split of who's paying it.

Phil Kessel's NHL cap hit is $8,000,000 so his cap hit in fantasy leagues should be $8,000,000. Just because in the NHL Toronto and Pittsburgh are sharing the cap hit should not affect his salary in fantasy leagues.

All leagues that I run use the full salary. Kessel would be at $8m for us. How it should be IMO.

As rataylor says, is your league willing to go through everyones salaries to see who else is owned by certain NHL teams with retained salary?

Man, what a nightmare that would be for the commish/admin to have to manually go in and adjust those. In one of my keeper leagues, I am responsible for updating salaries after new deals, and we also offer a discount for "franchise" players which have to manually get adjusted. We also do buyouts which have to get adjusted as well. Both of those are pain in the arses to deal with. Having to deal with retained salaries would be one more nightmare if we had it there too.

If this goes through, I pity the poor bastard who has to deal with this and adjusting the salaries.

For the sake of simplicity I would go with the NHL cap hit regardless of who pays what. It will quickly become a league management nightmare trying to track every NHL salary that is retained.

The voting doesn't seem divided here and I'm with the majority.

I would guess that the GMs who own players like Kessel are in favor of the option that gives them more cap space...

Obviously your league can create whatever rule it wants, the key is to be consistent and ideally have a logical basis for the rule.
It would make the most sense to me to use the full cap hit of the contract as that's a player's cap hit. The only problem here is you need to make sure you use the proper number for those players who have retained salary.

If you start adding a ton of extra rules the league can quickly get bogged down in problems and unintended consequences as well as creating a massive problem for the commissioner to manage.
