    Default inaugarul prospect draft results

Just finished out first prospect draft in a head to head keeper league. Any player who hasnt played >10 games in the nhl, or been previously drafted by a team (Toews, Backstrom, the Johnson\'s have been) is available. Goals are worth 1 point, assists 0.5, nothing else matters - goalies were not considered.

Numbers correspond to position picked in the draft.

Who won and who lost? Good picks bad picks? Who went early and who was a steal? I\'m looking for all opinions, good or bad, on all teams. Thanks!

Can you post an overall draft ranking, too? That\'ll make it easier to review the individual steals.

Broadway had a great draft. Great job getting both Mueller and Cherapanov. Halifax and IR did quite well, too. Altona of course, but I would not have chosen Turis first overall.

Goligoski at #5 overall is too early. Espo at 11 (Halifax) is too late. Hamill at 40 (IR), Grigorenko at 55 (Broadway) and Murphy at 78 (Blindsides) also strike me as good picks that went later than they should have in a prospect draft.

Teams That Did Well: Broadway, Altona, Newmarket

    Teams That Did Bad: asdfjkl;

    Good picks: Setoguchi, Berglund, Kulemin

Steals: Soderberg, Bouchard, Sheppard(big steal, Couture, McGinn, Stralman(big steal),

Bad Picks/Too Early: M. Staal, Bergfors, Mayorov, Goligoski (I like his upside, but at #5?), Esposito, Hughes, Alzner, Wishart, Zaborsky, Zagrapan, Vasyunov

My first reaction was that Altoona could have done more with two picks in the top 4. I believe Turris and Okoposo will turn out to be nice players, but passing on the likes of Mueller, Cherry, Espo, Oshie (possibly), and Kane all would have been more appealing to me. Dobber has Okoposo as the 48th ranked prospect. Obviously some of the guys there are not available, but it makes me scratch my head, as does Goligoski at #5,

A couple of steals I believe may end up being Berglund at #34, Sheppard at #35, and Grigorenko at #55. Bouchard too considering the camp he had in Washington and their need for RW.

Surprises/Too Early - Okoposo (just at number 4 considering who else was available), Goligoski, Staal, Bergfors, and Hughes.

Lost Cause has a nice first half of the draft, but there were some players picked up later that I would have shied away from. To me Broadway has the best draft. Blideside and Newmarket did well and Altoona made up for the question at the beginning with some nice mid to late draft work.

Whats the deal with the Whalers having one pick and the Flyers two? I almost don\'t know how to react to that.

Is this for the creation of a farm team or are these guys to supplement a \"pro\" roster? I suppose that this merits consideration here because how I draft a farm team may be based more upon where I see my team needing help in the future (short versus long term) as opposed to BPA.

Okposo is the real deal. Picking him at #4 was not a reach at all. Dobber has him ranked way too low. He should probably be in the top 10. Would have made the Isles this season he decided to turn pro. This kids the real deal.

Both those teams made it to the finals last year and went balls to the wall to get their, giving up a significant amount to get there. Whalers have a good chance to repeat, Tulane will be rebuilding for a couple of years i think.

Thanks for all the comments so far. Keep \'em coming.

Pick 4- Swap Okposo with Oshie. Okposo isn\'t close; Oshie is.

Pick 10- Swap Sterling with Esposito... or anybody else besides Sterling. He\'s not an NHL player.

Pick 41- Swap Boyle with Couture.

Pick 63- Swap Bourque with McGinn.

Pick 71- Swap Zaborsky with any forward after him. I\'m not sold on him.

Pick 73- Swap Quick with Chorney. Quick is a longshot; Chorney is criminally underrated.

    Steals:

Taylor Chorney- He\'ll be an Oiler next year.
Igor Grigorenko- He\'s a Wing this year.
Jakub Kindl- Going to be a big-time player.

    Too High:

Alex Goligoski- Excellent prospect, but the Pens don\'t have room on the PP this or next year.

Kyle Okposo- Has high-end potential, but he seems to lack hockey sense.

Brett Sterling- AHL star. That\'s about it.

I think Broadway had the best draft, by far.

Obvious steals - Sheppard, Bouchard, and C.Murphy (others have said this, but these guys merit mentioning again.)

I think Sterling will make it in the NHL, but was taken a little too high, there were others that coulda gone before him. Unless Lost Cause was drafting a player he needed to contribute right away.

Patrick McNeill -D-WSH - He may have some faults, but he is a possible PP QB in WSH in a few years. He was taken 1st overall in the 03\' OHL Draft, he\'s put up 77 pts in 05-06 and was a point a game this year.

Ivan Nishnevskiy - Like McNeill, there were other D taken before him that don\'t have as much offensive upside.

I don\'t think you\'re telling us everything blindside, at a quick glance, I either didn\'t see them in the draft results or you guys missed out big time, but I don\'t see Toews, Little, Backstrom and Letang. There has to be another reason for this, this many GM\'s can\'t be that bad.

On another note, tell Broadway to look up Simon Hjalmarsson. We like similar players, so I\'m sure he\'ll like this guy (Unless you want him for yourself ... )

Hjalmarsson is so under-rated. He may be light, (the same weight as Turris) but from what I saw from him in the WU18 Canada-Sweden game, he looks to be a possible future star in the NHL. In that game, IMO, he was the best player on the ice, and that was with Turris, Esposito, Backlund, and Stamkos, also in that same game. He\'ll most likely be playing with Lars Eller again in St.Louis, with their chemistry, Hjalmarsson should score alot of goals in the future. If there are any other negatives, besides him be light, it\'s that he\'s a few years away from seeing NHL action.

Thanks for the comments guys. As you\'ll see up the top, a few prospects weren\'t available for drafting such as Toews, Backstrom, Letang, the Johnson\'s as they had been drafted previously.

As for Hjalmarsson, he was actually the top ranked forward on my list but i couldnt pass up on Murphy and Chorney after drafting 5 forwards to start the draft.

As far as i know, Broadway is the only other guy who posts on this site so its no wonder his farm looks good lol

Stirling at #10 overall is a horrible pick in my opinion.

Sekera in the last round is an absolute steal.

asdfjkl; would have faired better with Maggie the Monkey making the picks. :P

    Default Re:inaugarul prospect draft results

\"What did the Whalers aquire to only have 1 draft pick?? very curious..\"

Lots of top notch rentals (with escalating salaries most of the top talent will go back into the auction pool). However, this will still really hurt them a few years down the road.

\"I am just curious why goalies were not part of the draft.\"

We use teams rather than specific goalies. It\'s just not worth it micromanaging tandems.

\"Stirling at #10 overall is a horrible pick in my opinion.\"

I think he fell in love with his pick -- went into scrounge mode way too early.

\"Sekera in the last round is an absolute steal.\"

    I agree!
