    Default (Imagined) Detroit - Anaheim

    to Detroit
    Clayton Stoner

    to Anaheim
    Pavel Datsyuk

With the Wings not bringing back Quincey, they will probably look towards the FA market to sign a defenseman. Stoner has two years left and half the cap number of Datsyuk. This also saves them from having to give up a guy like Pulkkinen or Jurco.

We know Anaheim has an internal budget, so they never spend all of their cap space. So they should have an extra $3.25M in cap space (adding what Datsyuk would bring vs. Stoner) and it would save the team $3.25M in actual dollars because they wouldn't have to pay Stoner.

    Thoughts?

    It's a good thought but I can't see the Wings committing 18.25M for Green(6M),Kronwall(4.75),Ericsson(4.25) and Stoner (3.25).

That's 18,25 M for three third pairing D(Kronwall-Ericsson-Stoner) and one second pairing D(Green). And I'm being nice to Kronwall and Ericsson here lol

Datsyuk's $7.5M cap hit doesn't disappear with him leaving for the Motherland. He signed this deal as a 35-year-old so the team that has him on the payroll eats the full cap hit regardless of playing status.

For that reason alone, ANA gains nothing from this proposed deal and also why Kenny Holland has been publicly stating he thinks he can't move the contract out.

    But stranger things have happened.

I know that. My reasoning was that Anaheim never spends to the cap ceiling. They already have $3.25M cap dedicated to Stoner. Since they don't spend to the ceiling (the last four year they have had an average of $6.8M in cap space) they can add an extra $3.25M cap (Datsyuk's $7.5M), but would be saving $3.25M in actual dollars. That would be huge for a small market club like Anaheim.

But lose an active player at the same time. ANA would have to fill Stoner's roster spot, likely with a rookie D in Theodore/Montour at a reasonable cash cost but you're now pushing the cap cost up into the $8M range. I can appreciate the budget-team motivation to eat a contract with no cash outlays attached to it. But you lose all maneuverability (spelling?) as a GM is you make a deal like this. Going into a year where you WILL need to tweak your roster prior to expansion. The costs outweigh the benefits to my eyes.

The only teams that will take Datsyuk will be teams looking and begging to get to the floor.

And Detroit will have to give them incentive aka a pick.

    It's a decent proposal.
I was thinking about Stoner too... he's serviceable, but yet ANA has enough depth where he's not needed.
Is there good bear hunting in Michigan?
    Maybe up in the U.P.?

I like it. I get it.

Datsyuk's cap hit is real but there are no real $$ being paid.

Stoner is being paid $3M+ to sit in the pressbox and cock block the kids.
