Just Won the Draft Lottery - For My Team Should I Take Matthews or Laine (REP)
Hi Everyone,
We had our draft lottery last night and I won the 1st overall pick. I know there have been a few other Matthews vs Laine threads but I was hoping to get some feed back as to who other members would pick for my team specifically (see team and league details in my signature). I am leaning one way but would like to get some unbiased opinions before I share my thoughts.

Lots of other threads on this topic. In my opinion, league set-up, team, etc. None of it matters. I would be taking Matthews first. It's one of those things you don't overthink. Regardless of how the media is trying to spin it, Matthews is the best option.

Pick Matthews and use your C depth to get a solid RW to go with Kucherov.

I am one of the seemingly rare fellas that would not be surprised at all if Liane secures calder trophy and actually has the better looking trajectory by season end. It's a toss up in my opinion but would likely go with Matthews mainly because I think Toronto has a more stable future with a clear path for a young stud C.

Another Matthews vote. Don't buy into that ''his favourite player is Toews so he will focus on his 2-way game rather than netting points'' mumbo jumbo that tends to scare some 1st overall pick owners. He should become an elite offensive threat for years to come and SINCE his 2-way game is good, he should be able to produce as soon as next year (he's not McDavid but he can draw comparaisons to Eichel though IMO).

Not to beat a dead horse, but the reality is the perceived value (and likely the real value) of Matthews is a clear cut above Laine. If you really like Laine then you are better off trading down to the 2nd pick and getting another asset back in the deal.
