Your example wasn't extreme though, as it is happening in Tampa right now as you said. I just had trouble seeing any team who would be willing to sign him for his services yet not wanting to play him at his natural position... well maybe Pittsburgh and NYI but that's about it

I wonder how much his signing somewhere and when will slow up signings on July 1st. Gotta think he's most teams top priority if they have a chance to sign him and the cap works. This could linger. I don't think it's a July 1st signing for him.

If he’s got one team on his mind, it will be pretty quick. But if he’s actually testing it, 1 month is my guess.

I think it will be a little more straight forward than that. He will probably just go down his priority list of locations, and see where meets his demands first. I don't see it being longer than a week. Especially with the open negotiation period now before July 1st, it should be within a few days of FA opening.

Forgot about that. I was thinking 2-ish weeks for contracts to come in, and about a week for him to think about where he signs.

Don't worry. I was halfway through writing my post before I remembered the early negotiation period. I feel that the week isn't exactly necessary for him. He knows where he wants to sign, and if he gets the contract there then it's probably a done deal.

I'm kind of ticked that Toronto won the #1 overall pick... because I would've liked to have seen if my confidence that Stamkos would become a Leaf was justified.
Now... I actually have an out-clause, per below.

I'm 80%+ that Stamkos goes with Toronto.
The team has been starved for a "face" for too many years now.
And Stammer loves Toronto.
It's done.

Only case he doesn't sign there, IMO, is the 20% shot that Toronto wins draft lottery... which is April 30th... in Toronto.

This is his chance to live out (what I assume is) his dream... of not only being a pro hockey player, but of helping the Leafs win a Stanley Cup.
We know he'll have enough money either way.

I'm with P7 and just about everyone else here. I truly get the feeling he will sign in Toronto.
My 2nd choice is Detroit, call it crazy but one can see Holland moving Datsyuk's contract to help sign Stamkos.
But at the end of the day I truly believe he will be a Maple Leaf.

It's got that " let's get the obvious over with already feeling". But holy mother of God when the day comes and we see July 1 and twitter feed with Dregs says "Stamkos closing in on deal with" ______ ( not Toronto Maple Leafs) this place will go ape sh1t! haha.

that's my dream. but realistically the leafs won't get him for under 10M. the most i'd go is 10.5M, even then i'd be a little disappointed but at the end of the day i'd rather overpay for a 1st line C than give up quality assets for a fair priced one.

anything over 11M and i'd be pretty upset.

Kids also dream of lifting the Cup over their head. That ain't happening in Toronto anytime soon.

There’s few cup contenders who need C1, and have 10-11mill in cap space for one guy.

It would be very interesting to know what Stamkos is driven to do. He may like the challenge of being the guy to bring a cup to Toronto. I just want him to come out and say what he wants to do. Still like 50days away. ARGH!!!!

My knowledge on cap situations is nil. But I can see him signing with any of Detroit, Montreal, Minnesota, Calgary, Arizona, Islanders, Toronto or Ottawa. He'll go where the money is and would be an absolute idiot to take less just to play for Toronto.

Without looking at caps, and just going off the top of my head, Montreal, Minny, and NYI (have to think about JT), wouldn’t do it based on caps. Ottawa would base on INTERNAL caps. Detroit, something tells me they’re close to the top, but they could deal Dats contract and be 100% fine. Arizona….Depends if they wanna sign that big contract. Also would depend on if Stamkos believes they stay in Arizona, or if he even cares if they move.

You can point at any team and say, “this is why it won’t happen” tho. Calagary…I’m pretty sure they have sub-4mill in space. Could be wrong tho, and I don’t know who’s coming off contract besides Monahan and Guadreau.

I want this to happen so all the Nah-Sayers can STFU on certain teams. I especially want him to sign in Toronto so I can bring up the “Babcock won’t sign in Toronto, why would he want to coach that mess?” and the “Stamkos wants to win a cup, Toronto won’t be his place of preferred destination”.
