    Hey guys,

Just started new 16 team FULL keeper league. We are in round 3 of 25 rounds.

My first 3 picks were 1) Dion Phaneuf 2) Jonathan Toews 3)Peter Mueller

Obviously I didnt list every other teams first 3 picks, but what do you think of my first 3 picks thus far?

Scoring is pretty typical. Nothing out of the ordinary

Phaneuf was a great pick but I think you may have been able to take toews a couple rounds at least later and Mueller prolly could\'ve been taken in around 7 or 8. Of course you never know how the opposition views these players and i\'m a strong believer that if you want a player on your roster it\'s better to get them to early than not at all. Myself though I would\'ve tried to push things a little bit and waited a little longer on the latter 2.

Have a skim of the top 300 forwards, 100 goalies, dmen. It may help.

I agree with Flyer in that you could have gotten Toews and Mueller later in your draft.

If you dress 2 goalies, you may want to shore that up ASAP.

Personally i would guess that when you took Toews there were better guys still around like Kopitar,Gaborik, O.Jokinen, who you could and should have taken instead.

Anyways, good luck in the rest of your draft, and seriously, skim the player rankings on the left side of the home page. You can\'t go wrong.

    Cheers.

    Thanks!

No the guys you mentioned were gone already. Also we only start 1 goalie, with it being a 16 team league, and 1 goalie, I passed on the Luongo\'s and Price\'s and will pick one up later in draft, I wanna focus more on offense and my D as the draft wears on.

In my experience, goalies win pools. Of course that depends on your scoring cats, but dont say I didn\'t warn you...

Those are strong players to build around, but someone has to win the league in the first year. Don\'t overvalue prospects if there are players who are actually producing now available.

For example, I would much rather have Gonchar over Doughty. I would much rather have St Louis over Filatov.

But that is my approach, not everyone\'s. It is my belief that you can always pick up blue chip prospects, but it is a lot harder to pick up quality scorers who are actually doing the job.

Compare how difficult it was to pick up Malkin before he came to the NHL to how difficult it is to pick him up now. Prospect sometimes pan out, sometimes not. Keep that in mind when you go about your draft.

I think you did a great job, when Gonchar and St. Louis are finished playing, Mueller, Toews, Phanuef will all be in their prime... older players break down, continue to draft young studs , you will challange this year and next maybe get hot at the right time and win it all now, either way young studs are what keeper leagues mean.

I just took Bouwmeester with my 4th round pick in the 16 teamer.

    1) Phaneuf
    2) Toews
    3) Mueller
    4) Bouwmeester

I wanted Erik Johnson ( he went 1 pick before I took Bouwmeester) I almost passed on Bouwmeester to take Coburn. But I like Bouwmeester better, and has more consistancy thus far, plus I wanna see what team he ends up on after this last year in Florida.

Fantasy points are what wins pools, not prospects. Again, that is just my opinion. I would always have a player that is producing than one who may produce and some unknown point in the future.

You usually cant win pools with young (potential) studs taking up valuable roster spots. Take a look at the roster of teams that have won in the past. Do you see many prospects?

All I am saying is eventually your prospects have to turn into legitimate scoring players for you to win the pool. Why not take legitimate scoring players now and win the first year of the league? The reason why you draft prospects is because you cannot draft the real studs... except in the first year that is...

Taking Toews and Mueller with your 2nd and 3rd picks might be a good move for the future, but it does not sound like a team that will be competing for the win this year. You need 100 point players on your roster to win. I guarantee Mueller and Toews are not 100 point players this year.

Maybe post a few other players that were still available at each pick? With those in mind people can better evaluate how you\'re drafting.

Young is good, but drafting young the whole way, over-valuing potential is a good way to make your team a perennial second best, or worst. You need to snag some veterans that will still be putting up a good 65-75 points for the next couple years in order to really put a team over the top.

Personally, I would have gone with any of the underlined before your picks. Phaneuf is top of the line for Dmen, but you left some 100pt guys on the table for him, and he may have been had second round jugding by how long it took for Green to be drafted.

Even if you\'re looking to stay young, Kopitar would have been a better selection than Toews there. Similar ages, but Kopitar should have a higher ceiling, and is closer to it.

Then again, if you want a certain player on your team, sometimes you need to reach a bit. I know I\'d love Phaneuf on my team, but I\'m not sure I\'d leave Thornton or Vinny on the board for him. Same goes for the other picks: they look like they could have been had in rounds 4-6.

When you look at the draft, I\'m not sure I would have went down the same path as you, but everyone has different strategies. Picking 6th overall in a snake draft, I feel you have to pick a goalie as all the elite goalies will be gone by the time your pick comes back around.
Had I been in your shoes (and hindsight is 20-20...) my team would have looked like this:

    Lunqvist, Getzlaf, Gonchar(or Lidstrom).

Taking a goalie at 6, might have even caused s rush on goalies. That could mean that better forwards are available later b/c you caused other GMs to panic thinking they need a goalie. Remember that you can actually change the way the draft goes by making strategic picks.

But as I said, we all have different strategies and it is much easier sitting here look at a draft list after it happened saying the picks should have been different. You dont have as much info when you are drafting.
