Who is that guy? He also tweeted this after.....

"I didn't have the characters but yes, assume some retained salary in the Detroit deal."

I don't believe what he says

Makes you think Babcock may not be a fan of Pulkkinen as thus seems to be a better deal.

I believe it. If I remember correctly, the Leafs were close to dealing him last year and were willing to retain salary. It very well could have been to the Wings.

Assuming no retained salary that is.

If Ottawa can somehow figure out how to get rid of Phaneuf after 2-3 years they will come out huge winners of this trade.

I love Bryan Murray but I have to question his short term motives. Ottawa is a better team today than yesterday.

Fits both teams! Even though I'm not a phaneuf fan.

Does this open the door for a D being traded for Drouin?

Unless it's Ceci or Chabot in the deal, I don't see the Lightning dealing Drouin to the Senators. Not to say Murray wouldn't consider it, but I dont see it happening. Those are the two that Yzerman seems to want.

this isn't a short term rental. They don't need to get rid of him in 2-3 years as his alary decresaes every year.

Phaneuf would easily get 6+ on open market today

That doesn't mean hes worth it.

After 2-3 years Phaneuf on the books will be pretty detrimental. He isn't worth 7M today, and in 3 years he certaintly won't be worth 7M cap hit.

Listen I like the deal for the Sens. Save money for the next two years and will eat the contract the last 2 years. It makes sense. I'm just saying he isn't worth his money.

The #Sens will save 1.4 million this year and 4 million next year with this deal

Marc Methot got 4.9 and everyone said he was worth it. Phaneuf is a better d-man overall because of the offense and shot production he brings.

Cap hit is irrelevant to the Sens. There's no point looking at his cap hit. Salary is all that matters.

Cap matters when you want to sign more players because thats what the GMs have to worry about. Salary only matters to the owners pockets.

I like this deal for both teams. I am excited to see what a Karlsson-Phaneuf PP pairing could do to other teams.

Also now GMBM doesn't have to keep saying (Well essentially lying about how) Cowen is a good dman anymore!

And now TO can throw all the money at Stamkos

Worse part of this trade is the Leafs give up Elisha Cuthbert.

i was in a meeting when the trade went down, let out a massive "holy shit". totally worth it.

    great deal for both sides.

leafs clear a tonne of future salary and gain a good prospect and pick.

sens move bloated short term salary (cowen/greening/michalek). pretty cheap price to acquire him, i'm surprised the Oilers let him go if that's all it took, would have cost them less too probably since its not a division rival. good on the sens for addressing their biggest weakness, phaneuf will look great on the 2nd pairing.
