I really like this deal for Ottawa\'s side...

With a good camp, Shannon could find his way riding shotgun on the second line... he\'s got the speed and offensive potential to do it.

Not sure why the \'Nucks wanted Nycholat though...

Yeah I think the Sens came out on the much better end of this trade. And \'Nucks are pretty good on D so . . . whatever.
We get one of these - Don't waste it.

    TSN confirms

I have a feeling Dobber\'s gonna really like this one. high-skill undersized winger who all of a sudden found himself buried in an unexpectedly deep depth chart goes heads to a team with a dire need for extra offense on their top-6.

Nycholat is on a one-way this year, so this move suggests to me they are penciling Brendan Bell into the line-up as the 7th D even though he\'s on a two-way - barring a glorious return from last year\'s surprise phenom Luke Richardson, so Brendan Bell owners, if they haven\'t jumped off a bridge yet, should be happy :S
Up front, Chris Neil is pushed back to the 3rd line where he belongs, and Donovan is pushed back to the 4th line where he belongs. Jesse Winchester, who\'s on a one-way, seems to have the inside track to the 13th forward spot, and Cody Bass seems to be pushed back to the AHL, but that may change in camp.

Some people may take this as a sign that Vancouver is preparing to move a D, but I am not sure about that. The fact is they lacked an extra body on D all summer - courtesy of Bourdon\'s death - such that at this point i had Rob Davison slotted as the 7th D, and Baumgartner/McIver as the reserve D. Nycholat may take that healthy scratch slot instead, or he may deepen the Moose, which the \'Nucks are committed to maintaining as an AHL contender. Barring the \'Nucks bringing in another winger for their top line after failing to land Sundin, this move pretty much assures Pyatt and Raymond roster spots, one of which would be on one of the top lines.
Rebulding in two lifetime keepers, squads to follow ...

ok wtf is gillis doing..going into this year the canucks needed depth/options up front...so gillis trades a questionable top 15+- forward/propsect for a #6-#7 d-man..i hope all u canuck lovers can see that gillis has done jack shit to bolster their offence, other than putting all his eggs in one basket with sundin, who today on the radio sex he won`t decide until october/novemeber?..what a joke!!...another very questionable move by gillis,in my opinion he has bee horrible so far,the team has not improved..

I guess radio hky/sports talk shows are like phone sex for fantasy hky junkies, just like the Food Network is porn for \"eating enthusiasts\"…

As a Shannon owner I am pleased to see him go to the Sens, where they have 3 elite and 1 medium offensive players as opposed to VCR where they 2 excellent and 1 medium offensive players, therefore I see higher upside for Shannon in Ottawa due to better teammates. Both teams have room on their top 6 for a breakout candidate, and Ryan Shannon could be the one to do it.

The trick is can he breakout this year… I think he has similar odds of making it into one of those top 6 spots in OTT as he did in VCR. Anyone have any news of him like he added 20 lbs of muscle or grew 3 inches in the off-season?!!

Also as an Ilya Zubov owner (sad isnt it…) it just makes 1 more guy for him to leapfrog… and we know how good he is at doing that!

As a converted Gillis supporter, I now can\'t stand listening to \"Canucks fans\" rant about how bad the team or Gillis is before the season has even started.
This is a minor trade. Shannon was not the second coming of Pavel Bure. We needed a Dman with potential to fill a spot that was emptied from Bourdons passing.
Maybe Gillis has done nothing to help out the Canucks offence. So he signed Demitra, an unproven elder who might not do anything without some support. He also signed an overweight underproducing Wellwood who needs to stop thinking he\'s in/is the center of the universe. Gillis did sign Steve Bernier who looks somewhat promising and who may give the Sedins the keystone they needed to produce at a true #1 line NHL level. So 1 out of 3, maybe 1.5 of 3, an allstar MLB carrer batting average.
Also he let Naslund and Morrison go, freeing up huge overpaying contracts to a couple of underachivers in the Coaches doghouse. Will we miss their points? Maybe, but I\'ll bet you Demitra gets within 5 pts of Naslund this year. I can only see their departures as an improvement to the team.

And we have $10 mil burning a hole in the Aquillinis pockets. Gillis took a gamble on Sundin, but he is arguably the best player available for the team; What if he doesn\'t sign? Then the Nucks are at the same place they started at, not behind. If Sundin does sign here then let the parade begin and give Gillis the Nobel Prize for being a genius.
Getting a different FA at this point with who\'s available is a waste of time and money. Might as well see what happens and if necessary scoop up a player from a team that needs to make cap room.

Give Gillis a break, I think he certainly has more hockey sense than 90% of Canuck season ticket holders. Let\'s see what happens in the first 20 games before putting a noose around his neck.

I think most nucks fans are peeved by what is perceived as a lack of activity on gillis\' part...obviously he believes he has all the components he needs to compete for the cup, time will tell if he\'s right but I\'m inclined to believe the team is a work in progress if anything
