Alzner "probable" to miss todays game (DEC 8).......upper body injury....
Trotz said he would know Tuesday morning whether Alzner will miss his first game in nearly seven years after playing 401 in a row.
Washington avoided any major injuries to its top two defensive pairs last season, with Orpik missing just four games because of a lower-body injury. That helped the Capitals surge later in the season, but a strong start has given them some flexibility now with several players out.
This season, Orpik has been sidelined for nearly a month, and he was visibly frustrated during practice Monday after a drill. Trotz has said his injury isn’t serious, but it’s not healing as quickly as he or Orpik had hoped.
Orpik’s injury bumped up Schmidt to the top pairing with John Carlson, and the 24-year-old has handled the increase in minutes against better competition well. Chorney moved into the third pairing with Dmitry Orlov, and the second pair of Alzner and Matt Niskanen was unchanged. With six healthy blue-liners, the Capitals were 8-1-2 in the games Orpik missed.
