    Default Gotisbehere vs Matheson?

Keeper's Pool. Points only. Salary cap 75M$ (yearly salary, not cap hit)

So basically which one of the two defensemen would you take between Shayne Gotisbehere and Mike Matheson? Which one has the higher ceiling or is the surefire pick?

Also, would you trade the 20th overall pick this year for either one of them?

    Thanks!

I would trade the 20th overall for both of them. Overall the ceilings should be quite close with Matheson being the safer guy to own atm. He has a) the higher pedigree b) the easier competition ( Sanheim,Provorov and Morin say hello) c) the clearer path to the NHL and to PP-time.

I usually appreciated your comments a lot, so this one boggles my mind. Care to elobarate this? What currently gives Ghost the edge? And why would you take this years 20th overall over the 23th overall from 2012 who has nothing but impressed so far? Which prospect you could get am i missing that is heads and shoulders so much better to throw 3 years of development away?

I really like the ghost in philly. I can see him getting min. On a great pp. Maybe not right away, but I really am not to fond off most of Philly,s defense. I can see matheson over the pick too, but I was really looking long term and I think I'd rather provorov or sanhiem long term over matheson.

Higher ceiling and lower likelihood of reaching it: Ghost
Lower ceiling but higher likelihood of reaching it: Matheson

As Key mentioned, sometimes situation plays a bigger role than talent and in this case, Matheson's path is really clear in FLA. The fact that he's an all-round LS D with some offensive pop means he could supplant Kulikov and/or even Campbell for PP1 alongside Ekblad. No guarantee at all - but even if not, he should be solid.

Ghost has a very tough path ahead in PHI with the prospect pipeline already mentioned by posters. I'd need to see a lights out AHL year this year in concert with stumble from Provorov to legitimately believe he could run PP1 in PHI in the near future. If he's traded, perhaps his ceiling does make him the better own. But at the moment, I'd certainly be more comfortable owning Matheson.

I own both these guys and agree with the excellent analysis above. Obviously I hope they both make it sooner than later but Matheson should get better opportunity. That being said, Ghost had a decent shot till he tore his ACL so who knows, maybe he'll impress again.

    Thanks everyone for the replies.

I finally traded for Matheson because I also own Huberdeau/Bjugstad/Barkov so I feel it'll be fun to follow em all and I like the timing of the Panthers kids coming into their own and the fact that a spot on the 1st PP (Campbell) is about to open up.

    So I sent: 2nd rounder 2015 (35 overall) + 3rd rounder 2017 (about 80th overall) + 4th rounder 2017 (about 110th overall)
    And I received: Mike Matheson-D + 5th rounder 2017 (about 150th overall) + 6th rounder 2017 (about 175th overall)

How did I do? Personnally I'm glad I managed to keep my 20th overall and not throw it in the deal. I would've drafted Matheson for sure at #35 if he would've been available.

I really feel this could turn out into a homerun for me.

From all observations i have form the camps so far this feels like a homerun to me as well. I see Matheson besides Ekblad as the 1PP unit as soon as 2016-17.

I love Ghost here. Matheson isn't shabby either. In a perfect world, Matheson plays Roman Josi to Ekblad's Shea Weber. But I think Ghost has the ability to be something special down the line. It's a bit tricky with Sanheim and Provorov (who I both love) but Ghost has the best pure, offensive instincts among any Flyer blue line prospects.
