Default [Rumour] Five Teams Have Contacted Chicago About Patrick Kane Trade

The first article title I read indicated it was the Blackhawks who had contacted five teams. This version is much less interesting. Still juicy though.

This is interesting but I really don't buy the "last strike" stuff. If they were so concerned about him they would not have given him his current contract.

kessel got a good porpseft F + D and a protected 1st...and he still had to have salary retained making 8M.

kane is at 10.5M...the difference in skill/marketability has to be negated by the cap hit. and that doesnt even factor in the extra baggage that comes with kane now.

IF the hawks somehow do end up trading kane, i don't see them getting anything better than kessel, likely even less unless they retain a lot of salary, which doesnt make sense for a contender.

i suppose theres a chance a team overpays because it is Kane after all, but i doubt the hawks move him. he's either a hawk/prison for a long time

You have to figure Buffalo was the first one to pick up the phone.

I do. And they have prospects. But I can't see them moving what Chi would want. If they are out, perhaps Florida has the goods. The other three, eh.

    My guess situationally:

    Buff
    Florida
    Arizona
    Carolina
    NJ
    League:Fantrax 18 Team Dynasty, H2H (4C, 8W, 6D, 1G)

An interesting take. I wonder if maybe they figured he'd be quite tradable even at that expensive number so they made the push to retain the asset at all costs. And also if they felt the best way to empower and maintain trust in their young star was to invest fully even with those lingering strikes "on the the books" so to speak. I think we've all seen examples where people are more likely to engage in disruptive behaviour if trust isn't there, you know?

I'm with you on this but in the article the 2012 "last strike" was presented in a way that draws a connection to a potential deal today. That's what I don't buy. I don't think the Hawks have been on the verge of being done with Kane all this time. I totally believe other teams have contacted the Hawks to acquire Kane, which makes total hockey sense.

Yes absolutely. I don't think they ever really would have considered moving Kane prior even if he was on his last strike.

I mean that's only teams that have room at the moment. Toronto got what they got because they are a rebuilding team and wanted prospects/youn players/picks. Chicago would likely be much more amenable to a player for player/salary for salary move, with a lot of options available.

    Winnipeg for Wheeler/Byfuglien/Ladd
Tampa for some type of Stamkos package? (who knows)
    Islanders for Okposo something
    Panthers for Huberdeau?
    Hurricanes for Staal?
    St. Louis Blues for Backes?

Not really saying in of the above deals are at all possible/plausible. But that's just a short list of starting points for deals off the top of my head that are "hockey deals". Buff and Ladd have one year remaining. As does Stamkos and we expected progress before now. Okposo's name has come up in rumors and needs a new deal. Huberdeau is an unsigned RFA. Staal has long been on the trade block, and Backes' name has come up a lot this offseason. None of this is realistic, but you cant compare Toronto's return to what Chicago might get, and you can't just look at teams that can afford the whole cap hit, because Chicago as a team has much different needs than Toronto did. If they traded Kane I would be shocked if it was for just prospects rather than a top 6 roster player with a tangible salary. So in that regard, moving forward, lots of teams would have cap space for a player like Kane. And a lot of these UFA guys could be involved in the first NHL sign and trade.

I think that the Toews and Kane contracts were terrible (for the team) at the time and are still terrible now. Maybe that realization has made it to the top of the Hawks foodchain. If there is a chance to get out of that commitment before it starts maybe the Hawks do look at moving him. I don't like it but I can get behind the Toews contract, because he is an elite good C (and he is TOEWS!!). Paying a dynamic winger $10.5/year is lunacy in a cap world.
