Default Matt Dumba or Justin Schultz

Both young offensive defensmen looking to step up next season. I've been leaning towards Dumba for most of the off season, but the possibility of Schultz being on that Edmonton PP is enticing.

    Scoring is: 3pts for G, A. 1pt for PPP, SHG, +\-

I like Dumba but I would have a hard time taking him over Schultz.

    Schultz for me.

I like Dumba a lot for fantasy but Schultz has a higher ceiling so I would take Schultz.

Agree with Axe and GN that Schultz is likely the better option for THIS year. Not because he's guaranteed to out-perform Dumba (I think there's a decent chance Dumba out-points him), but because if he does actually lay claim to that #1PP in EDM, his ceiling and trade value will become enormous.

As with all Oiler players I find myself saying... "THIS year HAS to be the year right??"

Dumba in 2 years. Right now there is no one in the way of Schultz playing big minutes on the PP

Thanks for the insight guys.. I love coming to these boards and hearing the informed opinions. Makes me proud to be a writer and member of such a great community.

I'm considering taking one of these guys early in the draft as the top Vets available will be: Stralman, Kronwall, Chara, Markov, E. Johnson, Goligoski, Sekera... Even if I take a bit of a hit in points this year, I'm hoping the long term potential and value of one of these young guys will pay dividends.

Does anyone love one of the vets or think an career year is coming for an underrated player who may be available? Or perhaps another young defensemen who may take off next year ? Ceci? Ellis?

Stay far away from Chara, he is 39 on a rapid decline on a team that is nowhere near as deep as it used to be.

I could see Markov continue to top 50 points for a couple more seasons, but other than that I think the ceiling for Schultz & Dumba is higher than those listed. And being a long term keeper decision those latter two are likely the best choice. If looking to win now Markov would be a better option. A couple young Dmen I think could go off next year would be OEL & Klingberg, but likely they are keepers for other teams.

I'd take Maatta if you can get him. He'll be playing with Kris Letang all year, which means 17+ minutes of regulation time with Crosby/Malkin/Kessel/Hornqvist. He should nab a couple minutes on the second PP, too, and if Letang gets hurt? Watch out.

Tyson Barrie is a great young defencemen with a high ceiling. Racked up very impressive points last year (53!!) with a +5. He's only going to get better, and I believe his team (COL) will also do much better this year too.

Between the two guys you mentioned, I'd go Schultz- - that PP is very enticing and the main reason to get him.

Fantastic insight fellas! Looks like I'll be going for Schultz with the earlier pick. Maybe get Dumba a little later on!

I'd go with Schultz over Dumba. But this is the last call for Schultz he needs to produce.

This right here. I still believe in Schultz but this year is a doozie for him. If he gets oodles of PP time and doesn't reach 50, I'll start losing faith... rapidly. I still give him a shot this year over Dumba and hope for the big payoff.
