    Default Fowler Trade Offer

I have been working on getting Justin Schultz off of another GM, and what he has come back with is Sekera and Schultz for Fowler.

Its for the league in my sig, we use players aav. I would have to work some things around before the start of the season cap wise to make it work.

Am i crazy to not just hit the accept button, or is there something fishy that i am missing? Seems like a big return for Fowler.

    Thanks for responses!

Honestly Fowler is a familiar name for Anaheim but really only produced a quality fantasy season once, twice if you count 2 years ago. Schultz has really disappointed and Sekera has had 1 good season as well. Anaheim will play Fowler as he is a solid defender and pretty good offensively. Sekera and Schultz could and should be better but I feel like every year we say the same thing about Edmonton and they disappoint. You are taking a chance on those 2 but the upside could be way more than Fowler. Fowler is the surer thing as he will get around 35? points while the other 2 guys are a bit of a gamble with higher upside.

See it more as a cost-clearing measure for the other GM. If he doesn't believe in Schultz, then likely doesn't believe in EDM for this upcoming season, thereby rendering Sekera (and his cap hit) rather useless to him as well.

The challenge for me this year is who will be the top dog on the PP - Schultz or Sekera. By getting the handcuff, you're almost guaranteed to have the #1D on that PP.

The challenge for you will be to determine if their 2 cap hits are worth it to have the #1D on the Oil. That's $9.4 (I think), which is A LOT of dough to spend on an uncertain return.

If your plan is to lock up the #1 PPD of the Oil long-term, then I think you pay the piper and hedge your bets. But if you're really trying to win it all this year, you're taking a massive risk spending that much cap on 2 Oilers D who haven't put up numbers that justify their cap hits.

Without a cap, this deal is a clear win for you. In a cap league, I'm only making this deal if I'm adamant about having the Oil likely PPQB.

The others have higher upside...especially with that Oil powerplay. 2 gambles but pretty good chance they outpoint him.

Like the others have said, it's a risk taking those two.

I would call it a calculated risk though. The likelihood that those two both hit 40 pts is pretty high. Fowler will get close to 40 or even hit that mark himself. So two 40pt D for one.

The downside is if Schultz craps the bed again, and Sekera takes over as the #1. You'll enjoy 40-45pts from Sekera this season, but as soon as they get rid of Schultz and get a true #1 D, then not only will Schultz be pretty useless to you (does he even get another NHL contract if this happens?) but Sekera will be put in a role like Bieksa, which will limit his production a lot (would be similar to his last season in Carolina). The new top guy will get all the minutes and PP time, and Nurse/Klef will take the rest.

Seeeeemssss likely with Edmonton.. then again, I take a step back and look at the changes they've made and think to myself that it'll be totally different this year.

That's a risk I would take if I was contending, and one I would leave if I was rebuilding.

Schultz is 25 years old, heading into his 4th season in the NHL and Edmonton has most likely turned the corner at this point.

And he is on a 1 year deal.

If he craps the bed my hunch is another team will certainly take a shot with him.

Sekera is gold in sim leagues but I think he will be asked to thwart the opponents offense rather than generate it for Edmonton.

Fowler on the other hand looks to be rounding out into a very fine defenseman, entering his 6th season. So he is younger than Schultz and has more experience.

I would not do the deal unless I wanted to gamble on a magical season for the Oil. Is that a risk you want to take ? Might be a season or two early methinks
Consider Sim Hockey because guys who play shutdown minutes, deflect shots and clear creases build championships. Yet in fantasy they litter the unwanted UFA lists.
