It was officially trolling, please close this thread. I was thinking there might be a slight chance that it was true but I knew 99% that it wasn't after these two things:

    - Him not posting the content of the e-mail
    - Nobody else getting the e-mail

Sorry for having opened the thread, I should've known that Yahoo never opens ahead of time.

One thing you may be able to enlighten me on:

Wouldn't the timeframe for whenever Yahoo opens Fantasy Hockey for a given season be a function of their data-provider?

    Data provider, IDK.

Two things Yahoo! does (/should) change before they open.

    1. They need somebody to do an opening "Rank" of players. Last year, I believe Wyshynski (PuckDaddy) did this for them. A certain amount of players are projection-ranked... then the rest are auto-ranked based on past one or two seasons of full stats (which is why some "injury" players are left to be value-drafted WAY down the board. We've even seen this with Crosby & Backstrom being mis-ranked after injury years).

    2. The data provider (yes) should have a player database with rookies &... possible... I mean... they could... update positional eligibility. But WHO AM I KIDDING!?!

I actually contact (by my never-used twitter account):
    1. Wyshynski
    2. Matt Cubeta (does Fantasy columns on NHL.com which links to Yahoo! Fantasy Hockey),
    3. Yahoo! Fantasy Hockey twitter page

None of them had any guess about positional eligiblity?
So none of them know about opening.

I think there's probably one person with Yahoo! Fantasy Sports that has a calendar that has last week of August highlighted with a sticky note that says, on the stickied side "Oh - and also open up the fantasy hockey for the 400 or so people that do that..."

    Pengwin grumble, grumble.
My projection: Last Week of August 24th-31st, sometime.

I was just wondering is if it's fair to assume that Yahoo can just open their fantasy hockey site at their own whim, that they don't have an agreed-upon date with their provider whereupon the provider is obligated to deliver prior to opning the season.

They may also have site improvements/maintainence scheduled over the interim when the site is down.

I just think it's unrealistic to think that we can just nag them with a petition and they'll respond with "Oh, gee. Okay. Here you go! Have fun!"

I don't have answers to your questions, but I do wonder how they can open baseball/football 3/4 months early and not even give hockey much more than a month?

Well it MUST be because fantasy hockey guys clearly don't need that much time to get their pool on, whereas those football guys may have had one too many collisions with a middle linebacker...or it could be based on popularity. Who knows really?

There's obviously a reason for the late start of fantasy hockey, but I don't think we should accept that its impossible for Yahoo to fix this. If it were a company with more common sense or resources they would never take the damn site down because it should be able to make them revenue in the summer. I just have a hard time seeing a Google Fantasy Hockey shutting down for months. That being said, a petition is probably not going to fix what is likely a series of internal structural/business hurdles at Yahoo which cannot be easily changed, unless it were to get much, much bigger.

Second that. Add to that the NFL off-season is almost twice as long as the NHL's.

Really? Why? It's a free resource, last time I looked.

I frankly don't buy that there's much of a revenue stream for Yahoo from fantasy hockey fans in midsummer. And the status quo would tend to bear that assumption out.

I'll accept that there's one for Dobber, but this site is his bread-and-butter. For Yahoo, it could almost be called an afterthought.
