I think most of Buff, Yandle, Seabrook will all be free agents next summer (IIRC).
And a team that trades FOR that player should be going after playoffs - which Boston is not.
I think Boston should consider this as a 1-year re-build.
Give the kids some ice time.
He's got to find out how well guys like Reilly Smith & Pastrnak & Connolly do.
Tank the team for two reasons:
1. The first season will create the "benchmark season" for Sweeney. If they rack up only 72pts... then it'll be an "improvement" if they get 80pts in 2016-2017.
2. Give yourself a decent shot at a high draft pick. Especially with the new "lottery for the #1 AND #2 AND #3 pick", it may be an even better year than before to land a top 3 pick.
Next summer, he can use cap space to simply add a UFA D-man next summer.
But Boston is not a playoff team with the moves they've made and their age.
I even think it's possible that they trade Chara IN-season.
