Ovechkin. I am not worried about the cap hit of a guy that produces like he does. The guys that are paid less will be up for re-sign in the next couple years and things will even out.

I will add that going with the combination of stars and cap bargains can be a pain in the ass unless you really stay on top of things. Most "cap bargains" get paid eventually and when that happens you might be forced to make changes. Finding a way to cycle in the next cap bargain over and over will be key in maintaining a strong team every year.

I would say Crosby/Price then Seguin. With 25 teams, I think good goaltending will be at an insane premium. I know that goalies are ridiculously volatile, but Price has been hyped forever, and really good for a long long time. Save percentages from last five seasons: .923, .916, .905, .927, .933.

And the guy is the same age as Eddie Lack (27), who people are thinking will now "take the next step". Ryan Miller started dropping off after his concussion, was never as hyped, and still his SV% didn't drop below .915 until age 32. I think that Price will give you the most value above replacement in a league were every single NHL starter and backup will be owned, and there are 4 goalie cats vs 8 skater cats.

For me in a dynasty, you look at a player helping you win for three years, then secondarily at their trade value in 3 years. Ovechkin will help you win the next two years almost for sure, the year after probably, but his trade value will consistently decline. Sequin will help you win almost as much for three years, and still have great value after that. Even without the cap difference, I'd go for Sequin/Price over OV. OV is too close to drop-off age to take second overall; people go too far in devaluing older players, but you really don't want to take that risk at 2nd overall.

Do you feel the same way about Price if this is a 14 team league?

Same Cats. Yes. You read the initial post wrong. I'd love to hear your answer.

Thanks for all the advice and the help. The draft started this morning. I grabbed Ovechkin. I listened to Pengwin7 and Eric to went with the BPA available in this format. Austeane wanted Seguin and so did I. I ended up breaking the tie in my head by siding with two of the members who's writings I have leaned on hard in the past.

I will follow this austeane's advice the rest of the way:

For me in a dynasty, you look at a player helping you win for three years, then secondarily at their trade value in 3 years.

I hope this info helps anyone who is about to draft or anyone looking at what others GMs value players.
    1. Crosby
    2. Ovehkin
    3. Seguin
    4. Price
    5. Lundqvist
    6. Tavares
    7. Holtby

Thanks again for all the input.

Count me in the Seguin boat. Long cap friendly deal offers up so many options. Age is also a factor. I love Ovi but in the later rounds salary will be force some good players falling and i always fared well snatching them late when everyone else had no space left.

    That is the actual top-7?
I'm not sure about Holtby but the rest make sense. Tavares and Lundqvist are relatively a toss-up.

I'd like to see how your goaltending shakes out after the draft, and whether passing on Price was worth it.
