Thanks for the links Axe! For the most part I liked Avery. Sure he acted like a clown sometimes, but I was pretty sure that it was mostly an act. He's a different character, not your typical hockey player, which I found refreshing.
I remember a few months ago, someone shared a link to other articles written by NHL players. Here's one written by former NHL bad boy, Sean Avery. Pretty good reads actually.
This one was written in Jan 2015

Here's the lastest one written about why he retired.

I read this the other day and my initial though was that it sounded like revisionist history.

I had posted the ones by Shattenkirk about top level defencemen, but someone else posted the Couture one about elite centers.
Half-way through reading this one and it's another great one.

I just like the fact that he had first dibs on Phaneuf's squeeze!!
After all his money talk, I really don't care how much money he has lost to be honest.. I pay to go to NHL games and in turn pay these players and get nothing more then a couple hours of entertainment in return.. So I don't care Mr. Avery that you spent $750 on a pair of pants or all your money on vehicles that you didn't need..
Love the find though Axe!!

Avery is an interesting guy, for certain.
I always thought he didn't fit with the "hockey guy"... but was a guy that was "playing hockey".
People often lump in Matt Cooke & Sean Avery as goons - they are - but they are completely different.
Avery always struck me as an intellectual introvert, somebody who did take a business-like approach to his "career as a hockey player" and did, as he says, put on a character for sake of the job.
Whereas Cooke IS a "hockey guy" (amongst the boys) but has always been too overly intense about trying - to the point where his endorphins turn him recklessly violent (occasionally).
re: Avery's philosophy on life...
I am a big fan of looking at your life in pieces ("second life")/ stages.
But it does make it a struggle for a guy like Avery where he sees being a "hockey guy" as one stop in his lifetime.
He talks about his struggle with motivation day-in, day-out... and this happens when you feel like you are not in a place where you WANT to be long-term.
Good for him to move on. Wouldn't surprise me if had some serious bouts of depression along his life, I get that feel from how he writes.
Good read.
I don't miss Avery as a hockey player, but it's a refreshing point-of-view.
Good read, I still think he sounds a bit pretentious but I was never a fan. I really like the players Tribune though, the Shattenkirk and Couture articles are great reads. I think it may have been posted already somewhere but the Dupuis article is amazing, best one in my opinion, the thought process and day to day of a hockey player on the fringe really come out in that article. Here's the link for those interested.
