It's gonna take a LOT of value to dump Bickell's contract.

That's Derek Engelland ugly, but without the Flames' cap space...

Sharp is signed for two more years.

In return for MSL, Tampa Bay took back a BIG contract: 5+ YEARS of Callahan at $5.8m cap hit.
(I know Callahan was a heart&soul guy for the ol' Rangers... but he ain't worth that contract. I'd argue that Callahan is viewed by NHL GMs as a negative per-year value at that price. Cally more like a $5m guy - even value.)

If you are putting "value" on each piece in that trade... you have to consider it might be like this:
NYR late 1st round pick: 3/10
NYR late 2nd round pick: 1/10
    Callahan: -1/10 (bad, long contract)
    for
    MSL: 3/10 (for 1.25 seasons)

Chicago can't do this (take back salary), so it's not comparable.

So, if we do this for Sharp... but realize CHI can't take value... here's what we get:

    Late 1st round pick: 3/10
    for
Sharp: 3/10 (as a potential one-year rental of a player)

I think THAT is what Chicago could get for one-year of Sharp... a single late-first rounder.
They only get the late 2nd rounder if they take back a slightly overpaid player.

Now... you can call this "a top six player + draft picks" for Sharp.
But it's really about the contract that goes along with that top six player... and CHI simply can't take a top six player salary back.

Here's the bigger problem for Chicago... Brian Bickell.
Bickell's 3 years at $4.5m makes him a massive NEGATIVE value.

    Let's start again:
    3/10: Sharp at $5.9m hit for one-year
    -3/10: Bickell at $4.0m hit for three-years
    ------
    zilch

Since CHI can't even give Bickell away... they need somebody to take him away.
And they may have to tandem gift away Sharp w/Bickell just to move out Bickell.
Callahan was an expiring contract. Tampa re-signed him following the trade.

Yep and that was one of the main reasons the trade happened. The Rangers weren't willing to give Callahan that contract so they had to move him.

Yea, I'm just saying Tampa didn't really take back a big contract, they took back an expiring one and chose to give him a new contract.

For those of you discussing Bickell, his cap hit is 4 M not 4.5. And Sharp will be easy to trade compared to Bickell. Either salary retention or a sweetener will be needed to move him.

Haven't heard what teams have offered up yet for Sharp but I'll take a guess:
Grabner (salary retained) + de haan.
    Spaling + cole + pick
    Howden + petrovic + pick
    rask+nash/nestrasil + pick

Some of those are significantly better than others.

Hearing Stars, Penguins and Panthers are teams most interested in #Blackhawks' Patrick Sharp. Asking price still too high.

Apparently Boston and Montreal are the most aggressive in trying to work a deal for Sharp.

If my math is right (using gf)...

Boston is at a hit of $62.7 (not incl. Savard) with 10F/4D/1G.
They just signed McQ at about $2.7m... so $65m with 10F/5D/1G.
Spooner (RFA) & Connolly (RFA) not included.

    They are still in trouble.
    They need 4F/2D/1 back-up for $6m.
[Most teams carry 14F/7D/2G towards their cap*.]

I still don't see them fitting in Sharp.
