Default Rutherford says no Malkin trade talks

NHL websites and other fonts of alleged intelligence are verily bursting with speculation that Malkin is the bait in this scenario.
“No, he’s not available,” Rutherford said flatly.

“Based on my communications with him or with his agent, he does not have an interest [in a trade]. He loves Pittsburgh and he wants to win here. Like everybody else, he’s disappointed with us not reaching our goal. He played hurt. He actually played when most guys wouldn’t play. There’s no interest from either side [the club’s or the player’s] in moving him.”

Rutherford meant to say: No, he's not available, until we can sell the team first.

Quick show of hands.....Who actually believes him?

I dont see why Malkin would want to stay? Talent is world class. Will always be second fiddle to Crosby.

I genuinely believe he is happy in Pittsburgh. He is settled there and is a king in the city. Further, I believe he has moved his parents to Pittsburgh as well. I don't get the feeling that Malkin is at all bothered to be the "2C" in Pittsburgh and that he wants to be the guy somewhere else.

Well in the same conversation he said he has 100% faith in his head coach and you know GMs are always sincere when they give the coach such a big endorsement...

The thing that bothers me is that the GM came out and said he needs more talent on the wings. Hornqvist, Kunitz, Perron and Downie even on the wings is pretty solid…they keep trying the same formula over and over. Isn’t that the definition of insanity?

Again... I take absolutely no stock in these kind of comments.
What is a GM supposed to say???
    I mean... c'mon.

If a coach or player is part of a team... their organization should appear to support them until the day they are no longer with team.
What actually is playing out behind closed doors... could be anybody's guess.
[The Anthony Mantha comments actually being the very-very-very-rare case of comments by an org.]

I'm actually at the point now where I think PIT needs to seriously consider trading him though.
Malkin was -2 last year and more & more it's looking like his body isn't going to hold up to the two-way, 200' work, 100gp of a Cup-Contending NHL center.
PIT either needs to push him to a wing and let him play like Jagr... or trade him for a younger center.
He's dynamic, he's still worth a lot, but he needs a two-way forward on his line to safeguard him to do his thing... and PIT doesn't seem to be exploring that.

FWIW - David Perron can be an absolute drag on a line's +/-... (this is why EDM was probably deeeelighted to get a 1st rounder for him. A player I loathe watching.)

If he's got any hope of trading Malkin for a reasonable return, he's got to play coy and play hard to get. It's not like he could come out and say "yes Malkin needs to be traded out cause his value is quickly declining and I can't stand the SOB" and get any type of real return.

Not to mention it would be a media disaster.

The big issue with Malkin on the wing is you want someone that skilled using the whole ice. You would have to pair him up with a very good defensively center like Bergeron. I mean this by off the draw Malkin becomes the offensive center, but on the defensive end he switches on the fly to winger. Then the center he plays with does the same thing. Obviously again if you have Bergeron, you want him using the whole ice. But that’s what I would hope for in Malkin, and you would have to couple him with a center that can play that type of hockey. Very difficult to find that guy

Just saying to switch Malkin to the edge would be a very hard pill for Pitts to swallow.
