I thought Buttons Mark Savard's deal might slip in here too.

Personally, the Gomez-Mcdonagh (as main pieces) deal still hurts me to think about. Just imagining Pk and McD skating 24+ minutes each on the habs blueline.

I never thought Neely-Pederson was a bad trade. He broke 140 points in the WHL twice. Pederson has three straight seasons of 82, 107 and 116 points in the NHL before an injury limited him to 22 games. The season after, he had 76 points in 79 games. At the point of the trade, Neely had three straight seasons of 31 (in 56 games), 39 and 34 points and was a combined minus-56 in those three years. With the Smythe division being stacked with the Oilers and Flames, the Canucks probably thought they needed to get someone who could score to try and keep pace, and they weren't pleased with Neely's defence.

I'm not convinced that if Neely had stayed in Vancouver that he would have been a 50-goal scorer.

Love these kids of retrospective articles but not sure I really agree with the list. Think there were some better ones to pick - probably could've done a Mike Milbury list all on it's own - and agree with the other posters that you can't gloss over "while the team did win the cup" or "while Lindros did become a Hart trophy winner" and rank a trade as "worst ever".

Good on the author for taking a shot though.

Exactly. The goal is the Stanley Cup. Even in hindsight, would Calgary rather of had Brett Hull and no cups for 10 years or trade Hull and win a cup?

Plus it would also allow Markov to play fewer minutes and he wouldn't be burnt out for playoffs.

As a Flames fan I have always resented how this deal was looked as a bad deal. When Suter went down in the playoffs Ramage stepped in and filled his spot on their lethal PP.

The worst deal in Flames history by far is the Gilmour for Leeman trade. That marked the end of a great team.
