Default Malcolm Subban to the Oilers?

    http://www.edmontonjournal.com/sport...702/story.html

With Peter Chiarelli in charge of hockey operations in Edmonton, what are the chances he goes after the Boston Bruins’ farm team goalie Malcolm Subban, 21, and offers up the Pittsburgh Penguins first-round draft pick (15th or 16th) to get him? Subban would be intriguing. He was the 24th overall pick in 2012 and has played two years with Providence in the American Hockey League (70 games, .923 save percentage). Maybe the Oilers would get another prospect or a later draft pick, as well. Subban is not going to unseat Tuukka Rask anytime soon, but is he ready to be an NHL starter now? No, but he’s six-foot-two, 200 pounds and very athletic. He’s give Edmonton a nice organizational tag-team with Laurent Brossoit

I don't think the oilers go after any more unproven any bodies..especially for a goalie. Not saying that he wouldn't be able to handle it, but in my opinion they need stability in net and Subban isn't it.

Looks to me like the hometown newspaper making up a rumor. I really don't see this happening. If the Oilers move the pick they'll go after roster players.

I agree the time for gambling on on backups or prospects with perceived upside is well and done with. Time to make a play for a proven netminder.

Svedberg isn't returning to Boston so I wonder if Subban becomes Boston's backup. Not sure if hes ready for that though.

Nah. I agree with the above comments. Time to bring in proven assets. Enter, Brian Elliott.

Elliot, Niemi, Anderson...ANYONE is better than what they had this year. Just get a stop-gap for christ sake. Young franchise netminders don't grow on trees (however, if the Oilers were smart they woulve traded the 7th overall pick in 2013 to Vancouver for Cory Schneider)

The Oilers offered Vancouver that exact deal but the Canucks wanted that pick plus a 2nd round plus Martin Marincin to trade Schneider within the division or at least that's how the story goes.

I heard something similar. Vancouver simply didn't want to deal Schneider to the Western Conference. I can appreciate not wanting to deal him within the conference but that trade, while Horvat looks like a nice prospect so far, was one of those stupid moves by Mike Gillis.

I also agree that the Oilers would be a little silly to trade that 1st rounder for another unproven. They already have a young kid in Broissot in the AHL who is looking like a nice long term viable option in nets. They need help today.

If they get their Vet goalie (Niemi, Anderson, Elliot) he’ll be there in that starting position until Broissot is ready to take over. It would be a solid changing of the guard timetable. My vote would be for Anderson because it seems like he’s good with the younger goalies from his time in Ottawa, and I’d have Elliot and Niemi as my 2nd options because neither seem to like having a younger guy as a backup. Niemi does perform better when he is pushed tho.

Price for Subban would be more than 16th overall pick. 2 years of development is worth more than moving up from 24 to 16-17. This is a deal they should be considering but also getting a proven stop gap until he would be ready for the show

I was hoping to link the Tweet from D.Cox saying Oilers should trade Hall for M.Jones but can't find it... (I think he deleted it)

Yeah for sure. Someone will become available that they'll snag. Maybe a 1 year thing such as Elliott. They can still trade for Subban I suppose and stash him for a while, but they need something / anything for the short-term.
