Ohhh! This will be interesting!
Here's some related tweets. Intersting quotes from Holland.
[QUOTîE]@FriedgeHNIC: RT @HeleneStJames: Holland says RedWings have made two offers to Mike Babcock, over past week, Babcock said he would like to explore possibilities.[/QUOTE]
@DarrenDreger: RT @HeleneStJames: Ken Holland: "If there is better situation out there for Mike Babcock, he's earned right to" explore that. Wings still interested.@FriedgeHNIC: RT @Bill_Roose: #RedWings Holland on Babcock situation: "I want Mike here if Mike wants to be here. That's always been my attitude toward players."Per twitter.@FriedgeHNIC: RT @HeleneStJames: Holland: If another team hires Mike Babcock, #RedWings would get 3rd round pick over course of next 3 seasons. Put date of May 25 on letter.
I envision something akin to Xmas Black Friday at Walmart
MIKE! MIKE! MIKE! TALK TO ME! MIKE! ME FIRST!
@SmittysRant
They could've stalled for a bit longer, their backup plan Blashill is still coaching.
But they're gonna lose one of the two...

Lol. Things happening quickly. At least a lot of talk anyway.
Per twitter.@DarrenDreger: Chiarelli to meet with Todd Nelson in Edmonton this wknd and will also reach out to Babcock...perhaps speak to him before he goes overseas.
Oh lordy, this will be the start of a crazy set of rumours. Babcock caught eating a Philly Cheese Steak, he must be going to Philly. This just in, Babcock buying gas, must be going to Edmonton. Breaking News, Babcock spotted in Vegas; he must be there to check out real estate because he’ll be coaching the new Las Vegas team.

Why is that? Is it because his contract doesn't expire until after May 25th or something?@FriedgeHNIC: RT @HeleneStJames: Holland: If another team hires Mike Babcock, #RedWings would get 3rd round pick over course of next 3 seasons. Put date of May 25 on letter.

I'm also surprised and a bit confused by the compensation clause.
I believe the Bruins also got compensation from Edmonton because of Chiarelli.

Babcock's contract with the Red Wings expires on June 30. Teams are signing a compensation letter in order to talk to Babcock
Coach's contracts expire on June 30th, at least Babcock's does per the article linked below. This makes sense you would need them signed until at least mid-June because that's when the Cup is handed out and then you still have an exclusive negotiating period of 2 weeks before expiry.

Since the Wings have given him permission to speak to other teams if he were to sign with another team while under contract with the Wings the Wings are entitled to compensation for this "poaching". I'm not certain if the Wings get compensation if he waits until after July 1 to sign, I think they do because the interviews started while Babcock was under contract. The compensation is a single 3rd round pick over the next 3 years, picked by the poaching team. I think it's a smart and fair move by the Wings to let Babcock start his search early, otherwise everyone has to sit around until July 1st knowing full well that Babcock is going to explore his options. This way, if he does leave the Wings at least get a little bit of compensation. Second, it speeds up the process of Babcock determining his future, neither Babcock or the Wings want that to linger. Third, if Babcock leaves it lets the Wings potentially find a new coach before the draft.Babcock has led the Red Wings to the Stanley Cup Playoffs in each of his 10 seasons in Detroit, but his contract expires June 30.
