Brand New Dynasty - Where does macdavid go?

Hey All

Just wondering, if you were in a brand new salary cap dynasty where the salary cap = the nhl salary cap and we use players cap hit, where would you take macdavid?

For arguments sake lets says stats are G, A, P, PPP, PIMS, Hits, SOG

top 15? Top 10? top 5?

Being a salary cap league I think I'd be taking him in the top 5.

Let's look at the contracts for top players currently (years counted from 2015-2016 forward).

Crosby - $8.7M, 10 years
Malkin - $9.5M, 7 years
Stamkos - $7.5M, 1 year
Ovechkin - $9.538M, 6 years
Giroux - $8.275M, 7 years
Tavares - $5.5M, 3 years
Seguin - $5.75M, 4 years
Benn - $5.25M, 2 years
P.Kane - $10.5M, 8 years
Perry - $8.625M, 7 years
Karlsson - $6.5M, 4 years
Letang - $7.25M, 7 years
Subban - $9M, 7 years
Weber - $7.857M, 11 years
Rask - $7M, 6 years
Price - $6.5M, 3 years
Rinne - $7M, 4 years
Lundqvist - $8.5M, 6 years

These are probably the players you would normally consider in the 1st round. McDavid gets the maximum ELC which is 3 years and $3.867M per season I believe.

No one on that list is really overpaid because they are star players, they get what they're worth. But those new contracts for P.Kane and Subban hurt their value, so they drop out of the Top-10 easily. I think Stamkos's new contract will be somewhere in the $12M range, so that drops him out of the Top-5 for me. Crosby, Tavares, Seguin, Karlsson and Price have amazing contracts, definitely the best ones on that list.

My Top-10 in a brand new salary cap dynasty league with those stats:
1. S.Crosby, C - $8.7M, 10 years
2. J.Tavares, C - $5.5M, 3 years
3. C.McDavid, C - $3.867M, 3 years
4. A.Ovechkin, LW - $9.538M, 6 years
5. T.Seguin, C - $5.75M, 4 years
6. C.Giroux, C - $8.275M, 7 years
7. E.Karlsson, D - $6.5M, 4 years
8. E.Malkin, C - $9.5M, 7 years
9. C.Price, G - $6.5M, 3 years
10. S.Stamkos, C - $7.5M, 1 year

Depending on your league, there might be someone out there who even drafts him 1st overall. It's not necessarily a bad idea but it means that team is probably not going to win in the first year or two.

One wildcard missing from the list is Tarasenko. If he signs a Tavares-like contract, he deserves consideration in the Top-10. But if he signs Kessel-like contract, then his value drops a little.

All in all, in salary cap leagues, it's all about the contracts. If you can get a similar player for $4M less (Tavares vs Malkin), that's huge. You can then grab someone who drops later in the draft with that extra $4M and get a better team overall.

Making his contract a 3yr, $11.325mill contract (League Max). So a max of $3.775mill/yr. Now the big thing is will the fantasy league call him a 3.775mill/yr player or a 0.925mill/yr player.

If it’s the later, he could go 1^st overall actually.

MacKinnon and Ekblad signed for $11,602,500. Slight difference only but that was the source I was using.

I agree; if McDavid was $925k player, then he would go 1st overall. But if the league uses cap hits (not salaries), then his cap hit should be $3,867,500.

lets say 3.775 (or w/e the number is) instead of the .925.

Here was my thinking of a top 5 but that is just my thoughts.

1. Tavares ( 5.5 mill thats a steal)
2. Seguin again steal of a contract for what he brings
3. macdavid (great contract for the first three years and the trade value would be unreal
4,5. crosby/ovechkin ( crosby is more assists and points, ovi is more goals, sog, hits, pims) this would be personal preference as although ovi helps in more categories crosby is cheaper
