"It has been just over two months since Jordan Staal suffered a fractured fibula in his right leg, an unfortunate accident that occurred late in the team’s second preseason game in Buffalo.

Staal underwent surgery later that week at Raleigh Orthopaedic, and he’s been sidelined for the team’s first 23 games since.

Following Saturday’s game against Pittsburgh, head coach Bill Peters offered an update on Staal’s recovery process.

“He was looking good today. He’s out of the boot,” Peters said. “He’s going to start training with our people off the ice. From there, if everything goes well – it depends on the amount of swelling and the recovery from workout to workout day-to-day – he’ll progress to skating on his own with Pete Friesen, and then he’ll join us from that point.”

While an exact timeline for his return is tough to nail down, Staal was originally expected to miss three to four months.

“There are a couple of different timelines, but we’ll just wait and see. It’s going good, and I think he’s slightly ahead of schedule, whatever schedule that would be,” Peters said. “I just know we have to be patient with it.”

When Staal returns to game action, he will be faced with the task of matching the pace of a league already in midseason form.

“When we get him back, [we will have to] be patient again,” Peters said. “He’s going to try to catch a running train. The league is going, and he’ll be playing his first game. It will be nice to have him.”"
