Giordano and Superstar Juice

From Dobber Ramblings today: So when Mark Giordano was in Russia for a season, did he drink a bottle of superstar juice? He left as a third pairing NHL defenseman with second pairing upside, and returned as Bobby Orr?

He was 23-24ish when he played in Russia. D-men develop later than forwards, so thats pretty standard for him to break out around that time

I'm still not convinced he's a superstar. Great start. But I doubt he sustains anything close to this pace

i imagine playing in russia allowed him to see the game differently (big ice, different seams to exploit, the value of maintaining possession and etc.) while playing a (presumably) more important role for his team allowed him for this insane growth. in hockey this type of growth is very rare for defenseman without superstar pedigree at the stage of his career giordano is currently at. in other sports though, its similar to the overnight growth of jose bautista and other players that dont come to mind immediately.

good for him, who woulda thought he woulda been the best of the trio with phaneuf and jbo a few years back?
