I was surprised the other night, reading the boxscore from the last Caps game, to see Johansson with his 8th goal of the young season.

Here is a really, stupendously great article discussing his early success:

Basically:

+ His shot rate is way up... good news
+ He seems to have found some great chemistry on a line with Burakovsky and Brouwer
+ Trotz is deploying him and Burakovsky very favourably in terms of zone starts and competition
- Shooting % is unsustainably high right now, but that's not as big a thing as it's made out to be, unless you really believe he'll score the 40 goals he's on pace for.
- Johansson has historically been a quick starter, fading as the season goes on
+ This is by far the best start he's ever had, in his 5th NHL season

Overall, what he's done so far is impressive. The shot rate (about 2.5 per game) is particularly encouraging. However, some of the things that have enabled this hot start may not persist. The sell-high warning signs would be:

- If Trotz changes his deployment of Johansson and Burakovsky, giving them more responsibility as Burakovsky learns the NHL game
- Any fatigue in Burakovsky's rookie season (although Kuznetsov is there and provides a comparable game)
- If other teams start identifying this line for more defensive attention (probably requires an injury to Ovechkin or Backstrom)
- If Johansson puts fewer shots on net
