Default Is this too much for Chara?

I give: Stralman and David Perron

I get: Chara (its a 241, so I would grab someone off the wire - maybe Patrick Maroon or Chris Higgins or someone)

My take: I am not really looking to contend this year, so looking for the best guy over the next couple, or perhaps the best trade chip this year. Chara a perennial top 10 D in my league (see sig below - goal heavy points only) and I like to insulate my young core with vet producers, BUT I am really liking Stralman in TB. I also have Hedman, so locking up 100% of the PP time is nice as well, not to mention Stral being a decade younger. Chara a 40 point guy at this point, and Stralman may hit that himself. Perron pretty expendable, but he is a solid 30-30-60 threat and still young. Still, Chara is Chara and Stral will put up more assists than goals, which lowers his value slightly.

Stick with Stralman or land the big man while I can?

    Thanks

This trade makes absolutely no sense whether you're contending this year or not, especially in a deep 20 team league. You do realize that Chara is 37yrs old, slowing down and becoming more injury prone right? Stralman is 28 while Perron is 26, these two veterans will insulate your young core. Your putting too much stock in Chara's past to properly value his situation going forward here.

I would go for Chara and grab Maroon off WW.
Chara will be a better trading asset once he comes back and you end up with best player in deal.
Maroon should step back into the spot on #1 line in ANA.
Stralman value will decrease once Hedman back.

Ya, I guess the thing that I am leaning towards is the goal scoring difference between Chara and Stral. Since D goals are the most valuable cat in my league, Chara's value is pretty high. He is good for 12-15 and that usually puts him in the top 5 in our league (he has been there 4/5 last years). Stralman just won't put up the goals to be a top 5 or 10 D in my league.

You don't need a top D to win in your league, just enough depth scoring will due just nicely in deeper leagues. Stralman is signed for a long time in TB, he wasn't signed for his defensive play so he's going to get his piece of the action on an explosive TB team. If the Oilers ever figure it out, Perron could also be on another explosive offensive team going forward in the coming years.

If you do this, it's because you're confident you can deal Chara for more when he's healthy -- that depends on your league (and its activity level).

We do have a very active league with trades - myself being the most active, so I am not worried about trading Chara if I am not in contention. The "pro" trade part is basically this: All in all I'd rather own Chara than Stralman and Perron is the cost of doing business. Chara gets more goals and PP time and will still be a force for the next couple, which is a lifetime in my league. I can either use him to bolster my D this year and next couple, or I can ship him for a better return when healthy than I could for Stralman.

The "con" side is basically what's been mentioned above.

Gotta say, I am torn here. Maybe its because Stralman was a waiver grab and Chara is a stud D, but I am having a hard time not landing Chara even though it may not be a smart move
