It might be a lot but it could look like a bargain if he can form some chemistry with Nash and become the #1 center they need. But I don\'t see Umberger being a #1 center at all.
At 3.75/year. That\'s quite a bit.

We get one of these - Don't waste it.

Smart move for Columbus I think. That\'s not too bad of a price. He could have gotten over $4M the way everyone else is signing players these days.

Seeing some of the other contracts, this one was a little more sensible, by the 3rd and 4th year Umberger will put up 70-75 pts. which fetches... what around 5 million these days?

True story. Not to mention how versatile Umberger is. He can play PK, PP, wing, center, anything. He\'ll get it done.Seeing some of the other contracts, this one was a little more sensible, by the 3rd and 4th year Umberger will put up 70-75 pts. which fetches... what around 5 million these days?

I like his game, and their is hidden value for that money, but a 1st line centre he is not.
In today\'s NHL though, what can you do? Somebody would have given him $4....and their in lies the problem.

The Flyers signed Metropolit to replace him at a cost of 2 Million per year. For the 1.75 difference they would have been better off keeping Umberger.

Your facts are a little off. Metropolit makes $1M/year ($2M total) vs. Umberger\'s $3.75/year. Also Metropolit is supposed to be taking Jim Dowd\'s spot. He is good and he is versatile, but I don\'t know if he will play the entire season on the 3rd line. He\'ll get some time there, but he should expect to center the 4th.The Flyers signed Metropolit to replace him at a cost of 2 Million per year. The $3.75M is the annual cap hit, not per season. It actually breaks down like this:
Year 1 - $3M
Year 2 - $3.5M
Year 3 - $4M
Year 4 - $4.5M
So $3M next year for a 26 year old player who put up 50 points last year playing behind Briere, Richards, Carter isn\'t bad in my mind. With increased ice time (at least top 6, probably 1st line center at this point) plus PK and a ton of PP time I think Umberger is going to have a career year.
He\'s going to see a lot more ice time in Columbus and have much more responsibility (PK, PP) and he\'s only 26 years old. He\'s not even in his \"prime\" yet. A $3.75M cap hit may seem like a lot to some people but I think it\'s a good deal for a young player who fits well into Hitch\'s system and (hopefully) will be a big part of this team for the next few years.

great deal. Umberger is extremely skilled and versatile. Should be a lock for 60 points.
