I'm actually surprised it took so long for advertisers to jump on the bandwagon.

Well done Old Spice - you took a product that my grandfather considered too old fashioned and made it relevant again.

The same thing happens to me too. I knew it must have been my extremely well developed musculature...

Damn you, muscles, damn you all to hell!

I made 2 predictions when this ice bucket silliness started:

1 - It would quickly turn into a game of corporate one-upsmanship. Individual narcissism has nothing on the will of corporate greed.

2 - Somebody will die as a result of the challenge. Maybe a toaster incident, maybe a heart-attack, maybe a fall from height. Not sure, but it's coming and the media/social media reaction should be entertaining.

Looks like #1 is on it's way, and hopefully #2 doesn't happen... but it will.

several have already died, a few months ago this went around New Zealand, well before it hit North America in full swing, but it was aimed at general cancer rather than a specific disease.

isn't that the truth. It is amazing how a simple clever and funny ad campaign can change everything about the perception of a product. we are cattle. lol

I am glad they have, all it does is increase ALS awareness and get people to donate. I am sure most businesses do it for the wrong reasons, but as long as the message is still out there and reaching more people, we can't really complain too much.

    The simpsons one is great.

I would argue that there is already too much ALS awareness at this point...

I can see the annoyance of it. My girlfriend still sits on the couch with me, on her phone, watching people do the ALS Challlenge. It annoys the crap out of me. Its has been a month of this stuff.

I don;t think there can ever be too much actual awareness of a social issue, just people perpetuating the annoying parts of it. lol

It's not the annoyance that bothers me (entirely).

I actually think at this point it's a rather irresponsible way to donate to charity. $80 million dollars for a few thousand sick people who may never see any benefit from it. Think about what 80 million could do elsewhere. Disease specific charities don't make a lot of sense to me, especially at this scale. It's not like a cure for this rare disease has some kind of sticker price on it, and in all likelihood that money will get poured into overpriced research over the next X years and no cure will be found. What a gamble.

If the goal here is to save lives or even to just help people in general, giving all the money to such a small fraction of people who may never even benefit from it is a terrible way of achieving that goal. How many people could that money feed?

The blatant misuse of water and the narcissism also kill me, but those are separate issues...

I take issue with the "wasting" of water. How ridiculous. (not mad at you just the constant complaint about it) read about the hydronic cycle.
