The real question is will you wait for him to sign in UHL and risk getting cap issues mid-season when he signs bonus ladden deal?

Isn't Budaj and Tokarski still in the mix there??

I do agree though, it would be a good fit for: the team, the player, his family, the fans, and the city..

    I could be wrong though
Yes, very wrong. A contract being one-way or two-way has nothing to do with waiver eligibility. That has to do with the number of pro games the player has played since he signed his first pro contract. When he signed that first contract is also a factor.

Here's how the one-way/two-way thing factors in for veterans: A veteran on a two-way contract can be sent down and have his cap hit nullified. A veteran on a one-way contract can't do that. If he's 35+ only about $100k gets shaved off the cap if he's sent down. If he's under 35 that number is somewhere around $900k, depending on the league minimum salary. Basically, unless the team is fine with pissing away cap space on a player they won't use in the NHL, a one-way contract is a very sure sign that the player is going to be in the NHL. Not a guarantee, of course, but a very sure sign.

I agree with Axe, he waits for an injury. Just unfortunately think whatever team signs him as an injury replacement is going to be very disappointed. His play (and that ridiculous shootout record) pretty much cost the Devils a playoff spot last season.

Actually the age isn't the most defining factor with that 35+ rule but rather the length of the contract. If a player aged 35 or older signs a multi-year deal, then that 35+ rule applies to him. But if the 35 years old or older player signs only one year deal, then that 35+ rule isn't applicable.

Just minor detail I wanted to add.

While I completely agree, he SHOULD just go out as a Devil.....the guy wants to play, so why grudge him for it? With the extras that he'll bring (experience, mentorship, whatever) I do think he's worth a 1 year contract somewhere. It's just a question of where? The teams that could use him already have a backup in place they're comfortable with, or they don't have cap space, or they aren't contenders and then what's the point?

I do think the most likely outcome is he waits until an injury hits, and then signs as insurance. That would open up his options since right now there just isn't much available for him.
