Great call on Lightfoot. I sing "Canadian Railroad Trilogy" to my daughter as a lullaby on a regular basis. She usually requests it, because she knows it drags on the longest of all the options.

So hard to choose just one here. I love songs with a story. Going to go with three, and lament not adding about ten more.

Bathory - One Rode to Asa Bay

    Cruachan - Viking Slayer

Nick Cave - Song of Joy

    Screw it. One more.

Led Zeppelin - Battle of Evermore

But seriously, I could go on forever. Kris Kristofferson has so many good ones. Amon Amarth are master storytellers. King Diamond, though he generally takes an album to get the full story out.

The mention of Willi Nelson made me think of this great country crooner and one of his best known songs with a story:

There are two songs by the Hip that really stand out for me (though I love tons of their music). I never realised until now they are both story-songs. Fifty Mission Cap was already posted, so here's the other one:

Some pretty powerful imagery in those lyrics.

Both of those songs can just take me to another place sometimes, man the Hip used to rock.

This is an excellent thread - Spent all day using an angle grinder to cut my 1950s cast iron bathtub out of my house.

How about Dinah-moe hum by Frank Zappa? That is a classic story.

I know it isn't Friday night anymore but I wanted to share this song as it fits the whole songs with a story theme so well. I will be honest, I had never heard this song until this past weekend. I was up in New Brunswick playing my guitar and singing at a small festival and after I was done, one of the other performers came up to me and we were sitting around chatting and talking music and he asked me if I had ever heard this song before. It was a song from a guy name Ralph McTell called "Streets of London". I hadn't and he proceeded to play it for me on his acoustic guitar. I was blown away by the song, the melody and most of all, the lyrics. I came home yesterday and looked up the original and I will say, I don't know how I have never heard this song before. I will soon be adding this one to my repertoire for performances. Amazing.
