Am at work so can't do the youtube link, but I'd have to put Gordon Lightfoot in there with: The wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. Will put up the link when I get home.

You just beat me to Hero of War. Rise Against has a few songs worthy of inclusion.
I feel like U2 should be represented but I can't choose the song. Sunday Bloody Sunday?

Iron Maiden has to be in the story song master class. Their discography is 90%+ story songs. Right off the top of my head, Piece Of Mind, all nine tracks are story songs.
Where Eagles Dare....
This is a good one too. Not a mainstream hit, but probably most relevant considering what's going on in Gaza.

What annoys me about Hero of War is how it was released as a mainstream single something like two or three years after the album was released, just because it had kind of blown up somewhere. Then the record label reps would try to push Rise Against as some sort of mainstream soft rock band, which is obviously so very not the case. It's a good song, but how it was used just gets on my nerves.
As for the song I want to pimp, here's Ben Folds Five - Brick.
GO WINGS!
Good idea. Some great ones posted already. A couple that come to mind after watching the ones above are:
and
Doolin' Dalton is a cool story (the Eagles). Does the Weight count as a story too? If you feel like a super super sad story, listen to Jason Isbell's song Elephant, but you probably shouldn't on a friday haha

Also love the Axeman's selection of "The Mary Ellen Carter". If you have never listened to Stan Rogers, do so. Many of his songs tell great stories.
