Alek Manoah will start Friday in Detroit per John Schneider
“He’s fired up.” More on #BlueJays Central at 730p ET
I'm not sure what Shatkins saw in his two minor league starts that gave them the impression he's anywhere near mentally ready to come back. Yes, it's against a terrible Detroit team but they are still better than what he faced in the minors, and he wasn't great there.

I'm hoping for the best but won't be surprised if he gets rocked.

I saw highlights of the Manoah AA start, and I def would have had him start another game. But he looked like he lost a fair amount of weight.

Something that wasn't reported a lot on was he came into camp 30lbs overweight. The whole send down could have been getting him on a diet, lose weight, and then rework his throwing with his new weight.

He was listed at 260lbs last yr, this yr he was listed at 285lbs and reports were he was closer to 300lbs. This whole thing could be about his weight and the pitch clock and it's not being discussed because last yr some reporter said Manoah and Kirk being All Stars was ridiculous because of their weight and Manoah snapped out publicly about it.

Ya, it's weird. Especially with the All Star Break.

They could start him in AA Friday and Wednesday. Recall him Friday July 13th/14th, and start for the Jays either July 16th vs DBacks or 18th vs Padres.

It would still likely lineup Manoah starting the day before Gausman in case you need to tax the BP for Manoah. Or they could have waited even longer, and had Gausman face the Angels at the end of the month if the opponent was the reason for coming back vs the Tigers.

Also all this talk about Ohtani...he's not coming to Toronto. But holy does he check all the boxes the Jays need.

You'd need to give up like Pearson, Manoah, and prospects. And it's not even worth it for the Jays because it doesn't move the needle enough at signing him bringing him in early. Rogers won't allow the amount of money needed to sign him. It just doesn't make sense.

And at 30yrs old (turned 29 in July)...how long can Ohtani do what he's doing? If I'm an owner like Steven Cohen (not with the Mets salary issues now though), I'd give the OK for a $60-70m aav, 3-5yr deal and see how much he thinks about that. But for him, I'm not touching a deal shorter than 8yrs, with a player opt out 3-5yrs in.

Man, Nate Pearson sent down...I don't really get it. Like he hasn't been great the last few days but wow. Maybe they're going to stretch him out as a backup if they don't acquire another starter?

Like Mitch White is on the roster still...he's the guy you send down.

Man, I forgot about Ryu...He's set to join the team in LA today. Sounds like he will join the teams rotation, and it'll likely be a 6man rotation. His FB reached 90.8mph in his rehab starts, which is kind of where you expect him.

Man, they're getting really hard to watch. So much expectation
at the beginning of the year has turned into huge disappointments.

A lot of underperforming players. Varsho has been a disappointment. Springer has been a disappointment. Chapman started so hot and fell off the map. The defense has been improved as expected but the offense has been underperforming from expectations at the start of the season. They are lucky Kikuchi and Berrios found their game again. Starting pitching, outside of Manoah, has been as good as could have been expected.

The Jays whole offense seems to have awful luck.

When they hit it hard it's at players, when they hit it soft it's at the gaps and the OF have time to reach it. The most annoying part of the whole offense is you have Vlad who is clearly a 40HR guy, but hasn't hit 20HR by game 110 or whatever they're at...Looking through the whole offense, I blame the hitting coach.

I don't know how much it is coming from the front office, or is it Schneider's decision, but the amount of times I see Vlad, Varsho, and Chapman pump the ball into the ground is infuriating. Varsho is hitting like 200, tell him to just sell out for a HR and I would think that's got more value than what he's doing.

But if you gamble, bet DeJong, and Varsho "ball in play" for live betting results. They make contact a lot and the bet is plus odds.

During the Donaldson era, I went to about 10 games a yr. Then I dialed back to about 2 times in 2019. Then obviously 2020 was COVID, then I went to a game in September during 2021. Then last yr I think I went to 1 game. This yr I went to 2 games so far and it was noticeably a better atmosphere more inline to a legit baseball game.

I have to say, as much as I like how quick the games have gone this yr with the new rules and how the time is more linear and you can time bathroom breaks and what not better...the new renos and bars would have done a LOT better with the longer games. The last Jays I went to, I felt like it flew and I couldn't actually take advantage of the new bars lol.

I'm not so sure we can blame the hitting coach. Martinez has been around since 2019 and Guerrero flourished under him. At least until this year. Their slugging percentage is down this year and this might be due more to managing.
