This Jays/Tigers series shows me 2 things:

    1. The Jays are not yet ready to contend
    2. The bullpen sucks

This is a talented team but something is not quite right.

I own Gregory Soto in a league. That's the only positive from this weekend.

Montoyo is holding them back. But the BP is also atrocious. They were hit with injuries, and I think the sticky stuff really messed the BP up. Chatwood became unusable, Dolis never recovered from injury and sticky stuff, Merryweather went down after becoming the closer, their closer went down (Yates), and Phelps went down early. Then midseason injuries of AJ Cole, Soria, Castro and Edwards really were just disturbers of the norm essentially.

Won't compete, but will soon IF they get a manager that will get them to the winners circle. Montoyo was always the manager before the manager. He's a players, nice kind of guy for the very foreign roster to help people become comfortable. But the core became good sooner than expected, which means Montoyo needs to be gone sooner than expected.

Jays have 9 games vs the Orioles left. Boston has COVID issues, Jays have healthy starters, and the Jays have a 3 game series vs Oakland at Home this weekend. I don't think the Jays make it into the playoffs, but if they do get to the WildCard, they will be crazy hot going into it, and anything can happen in a 1 game series.

I think they at least make the final stretch interesting, and will have a record above 500, which at the start of the season is something I predicted. In March if we said the Jays were above 500, in the race during September we'd all be pretty happy.

Now that being said...WHY ARE YOU USING THORNTON IN THE 9th!? Then why are you bringing in the CLOSER?! I don't get the Thornton use, but man, bringing in Romano for 2outs pretty much means he can't be used today because he pitched 2innings on Saturday. Whatever, I'm glad Montoyo finally is using his BP as a "We need to win" mode. But the lineup with Kevin Smith over Gurriel still confuses me.

That's the spirit. And hey after Oakland they do have the Yankees. Definitely a long shot to catch them but they have the right matchups. And teams going on 10+ game winning streaks (NYY) generally follow that up with a slump.

This team will tease me. Win 2 of 3 vs Oakland, bringing the team even closer to just blow it. I'm calling it.

I will say, the BP can be really scary if it comes together with Pearson and Bryan Baker being recalled and Merryweather a slight possibility at returning this month.

    The team outdid my prediction.

This team is so odd. They'll pull a pitcher to protect the pitcher really early, but will trot out a VERY obvious hurt Springer.
