A lot happened, I was crushed I didn't get selected to be Moderator, then I started losing interest in Fantasy Hockey (hockey in general). Starting to get involved again.

I actually plan on starting a 1 year points only Championship. 16 teams. H2H. 4C, 4LW, 4RW, 6D, 6 Bench, 1 goalie, $20 entry, Top 3 get paid. I want the best and brightest to join. The league is currently going through a feasibility study and lawyers .... the whole 9 yards

You aren't missing out on much. Not everyone likes/handles being the a-hole who has to moderate foolishness and hand out infractions or temp-bans. There's no perks is what I am trying to say.

The history of this cup begins on page one, and the prestigious name was developed ~ post 58-62. It has been an August competition but I believe we've held it a few times in July.

August was chosen as it's a rather slow month for hockey talk. On page one, the thread began as two members were racing towards a high post count.

Most competitions were set afterwards at 1000 posts/month, but it's been whittled down over the years. 350 is the current standard.

Yeah - the history goes back to late June 2014.
The NHL draft had passed (June 27-28, 2014)... and so the interest in all things fantasy hockey gets to its slowest point.
July dragged.

I joined the forums in 2010 and learned that July was always the slowest month - by far.
So, informally, late June - and with Dobber having introduced award icons - I remember proposing in a thread that I was going to "Go after the shiny FIFA trophy 1000 post in a month icon"... and asked if anybody wanted to join me.

Only doulos said he'd give it a go.
And he did.
And... it was actually fun... posting just to post.
Whatever there was.
And there was some stupid shit back then - a coloring book of ********, I think - was a topic back in those days.
And everybody knew there'd be a lot of stupid posts - one-liners and such.

And the Call of Doughty started the thread... since it was real... and since we both had 700ish posts.
But there wasn't yet - a dedicated thread to track it. And he provided us with that special place.

And then this one guy, Cobretti, shows up... and basically bashes us for NOT being serious about fantasy hockey... in July.
Well - people came out of the woodwork here & there - but I think the forums basically rallied around the "we are more than just fantasy hockey" at that point.

doulos was more of a trooper than me.
I get worried, pretty bad actually, about people that get mad at me on the internet. (I'm close to a "snowflake" perhaps)
So I bailed, but props to doulos for staying with it.
I think it really promoted something great about the forums.

He really created something great, doulos and Call of Doughty - for staying with it.
And of course... PapaBear (Dobber) showed up too... advocating for July nothingness.
And then somewhere the term "fluff" came in - because there was so much filler.

It was... kind of nice.
So - cheers to them.

After July ended - the "1000 posts" because a "something to do"... and some people went after in August.
And then August became the month to give it a go.

It'll be 10 year anniversary next year.
Maybe we'll have to do July 2024 - and have a group-go... see how many people can ALL do 1000 together!

As a follow-up to July 2014.

doulos did... truck through 1000+ posts in July 2014 - got his trophy icon.
vitun-thyma... a new user (out-of-nowhere!) joined forums and did 1000+ hockey-only posts (ZERO fluff) in August 2014... then disappeared. Some point there, being made.
Axeman33... went and did 1000+ posts in September 2014.
And with NHL games back in October 2014...
myself... and Fast Tony Deniro did 1000+ posts in October 2014.

FTD actually set a "then record" with 1300 something posts.
That was broken 2 or 3 times in the next two years.

So... proof that July 2014 kick-started some massive forum activity!!!

I will have some 'content' to put out later this month once my exam is done and U7 soccer (I'm coaching) is over. Hopefully yahoo will have opened up their fantasy hockey by then.

This is so true!
At my most I finish at around 10th for posts (for the month). I don't maintain that either.
I'm not a big talker in life either. Having fun letting it fly.

I think I could work myself back up to contributing to that.

Back around when I moved, then the pandemic hit, and then we had a baby, there was a lot going on in that 2020/2021 set of years. I slowly but surely tapered off without there being hockey to discuss. I had a couple leagues where a lot of my favourite forum members were active anyways, and I was receiving at least a few PMs per day of people just asking for me to drop into their threads with an answer, or to answer something that they didn't want to post on the boards because they had leaguemates here. And it became a chore just to open the forums tab. I guess that's probably what they call burnout.

In 2021 when Cam Robinson left, I also got bumped up from the Capped column to the weekly Ramblings. With that, I think my need to just vent into the void about fantasy hockey and whatnot was sufficiently filled. As a result my forum use really tapered off.

I had a few Cobretti competition years, and they definitely make July/August a lot more fun, especially if there is someone you're racing against.
(One of the more memorable races with Sulla (who I wasn't a fan of because he was a pain in the leagues I was in with him, and also contributed nothing to the forum - he was just an echo). I love guys that contribute hockey thoughts, and I also love the guys who contribute to the fluff, and the fun, and the personality of this forum. What bugs me a little are the ones that join a thread where a consensus is reached and post "I agree with the above" 1000 times in a month just for the sake of it. // mini rant over.

I know that I do enjoy hitting milestones, having those cool trophy icons, and having a record or two, but you also want to feel like you earned those.

It is a great community here (especially when you can just block the political section and live in the bliss of ignorance), and I do want to get back to posting a bit more regularly. It's a slow build up at the moment though, but by July 2024 I'll definitely be there.

In the meantime, keep up the fluff, the info, and the personalities guys, we enjoy them all!

Any way to check based on members that are active? A lot of old accounts are "retired" now.

Not that I can see, only filters are month and year. Would probably just have to purge accounts that have been inactive for X amount of time.

Sidenote: I'm the only one in the top 20 with less than 1k posts.

Additional sidenote: on the 1st page of the members list slightly more than half of the users have 0 posts
