It seems like the arch back up would potentially give you enough air to exit the sides of the slide, potentially allowing you to fall off. Really seems unsafe.
Verruckt, German for insane. Yeah I'd say that just about covers it.....
More power to you for those brave/stupid enough to try. On one hand it appeals to my inner speed freak, but me and heights have an understanding. I'll keep my feet firmly planted on terra firma and in exchange heights will agree not to kill me. Just the thought of being 17 stories off the ground is enough to make my manhood turn turtle.

Indeed super-scary looking considering the video doesn't show the following:
1. You are in a raft.
2. Strapped into a raft.
3. There's a full mesh cage down the entire slide.
Still fast, yes... but it's not like you're going in your speedo down an uncovered open slide!

And I'd bet the black stripes at bottom are friction tracks to slow the raft down considerably.
This looks really fun. You actually go down it with a few other people on a raft thing. The actual slide has netting above it all, so not that dangerous.
well. The link P7 provided makes it jsut look fun. I would definitely do it based on the second link, I wouldn't have based on the first video lol
As another aside, I would probably not want to be the first person. Once you get up to the higher speeds, that water in your face can't feel the greatest.
F that.
I got two fears in life. Heights and falling.
Again, F that!

The netting does eliminate the danger of flying off, but raises it's own risks. It needs to be held up by metal or composite hoops and given the speeds involved (65-70mph) hitting one of those could be ugly in itself. The opening had been delayed several times while they re-worked it to eliminate airborne rafts. I'm trying to find some of the videos from the test runs. Travel Channel did a one-hour special on the making of this for their show Extreme Waterparks.
I'm sure they have a contracted physicist/engineer to aid with the design.
They should actually be able to come up with a decent method of using water adhesion and raft geometry to sort of create a suction that keeps the raft down onto the surface of the slide.
I actually doubt (post engineering) that a raft, itself, will ever leave the surface.
The mesh is more for the idiots that actually unstrap themselves. (That's probably the technical verbage in the the waiver - that if somebody unstraps themselves and leaves the raft then they are liable for their own injuries).
I'd love to see the physics on this stuff though.
I'm a math/science guy.
In that TC special the designer said one of the goals was to have the rafts grab a bit of air coming off that second hill. The trick was to keep it reasonable. As you can imagine the early runs featured sandbag filled rafts doing some amazing aerobatics.
Here we go. Some test footage...
And the first manned run on the half-scale prototype....
I can just hear some of the southern folk down here watching this video:
I hear y'all done go flying up through the clouds after the low bump.
I heard if you stand up you get your scalp ripped right off yer head.
I's told that if you pass gas at a certain point the raft could jump right off that there track....
Oh gawd.
The rednecks down here would WANT to go after seeing some of those rafts go airborn!
The first few seconds of that drop would be quite the adrenaline rush, and if you did catch air off that second hill, what a surprise that would be!
Wouldnt need caffeine for a week after that!
