Oh he's capable of much more than that, the guy is all offense and one of the best skating d-men in the league. IF he's paired with Phaneuf then the biggest impact will be on Phaneuf as he'll be asked to play a more defensive role. I still don't really see Gardiner as a d-men let alone a top pairing one.

I think they split time on the 1st pairing, and now that Polak is in TO, then neither of them sees the big minutes for the full season as Phaneuf + Polak take the honour until one of the two youngsters (probably Gardiner at this point) takes over when the Leafs realize that they can produce more than Phaneuf can.
