Sorry rataylor, but as much as it pains me to admit it, lucifer is right on this one...while you're right that Letang would be the best d-man on the Oilers if such a trade did happen, that speaks more to how poor EDM's defense is than it does to anything positive about Letang. Letang is a PP specialist and he excels at that part of the game but beyond that he's pretty one-dimensional...plus he gets hurt all the time and I dunno how well his work in PIT would translate to the Oil. EDM needs two things, they need a great shutdown leader on D.. (think like a McDonough, or Hjalmarsson or Hamhuis, somebody like that that they could feasibly acquire, the Webers, Suters, etc of the league aren't going anywhere so be realistic), AND they need a solid goalie. I dunno if Fasth can be that guy, I think he can be part of the plan but I can't see him playing 60-70 games.

Well. McDonagh, Hjalmarsson definitely aren't acquirable. Hamhuis maybe. I agree, that type of defenseman would be a better upgrade than Letang. But not many of those guys can be had. Teams that have them know how good they are and don't trade them.
I'm not advocating that Letang is a stud defenseman. He's a 3/4 caliber guy in the defensive zone and an obvious #1 caliber guy in the offensive zone, and then add to that he's probably available. Basically, he's pretty similar to Jack Johnson (who is also terrible defensively). If nothing else, it gives Edmonton a guy who can legitimately eat 20-25 minutes a night. Not ideal, but still a decent upgrade on everything they have, and can minutes-wise shelter their younger guys a little bit.
I can see what rataylor22 is saying, but I do not think Letang fits there... My question is could they do it to swing letang elsewhere? Got me, just a thought I had.
