They wanted him a year ago, they got him now. Leafs traded a 3rd rounder for Jamal Mayers. Great move for the Blues, who have Backes lined up for his RW3 slot, and now get a decent draft pick. Questionable move for the Leafs, unless they have a trade for Antropov or Blake lined up; otherwise it just means Jeremy Williams is back in the A for another season.

Leafs are going to overpay and get a top 6 pick. Either that or they\'re just being crazy.

They\'re just being the Leafs. Or maybe they figure they need a veteran presence to show the kids how to go -19 on a defensive system team :S

    Why ?

Is 33 year old Mayers part of the rebuilding plan ? A 3rd round pick could get them a decent young sniper.

I do like Mayers as a player. But this is another Leafs style trade.

I think it has more to do with team chemistry and culture.

This team has a culture of losing and I think there are cliques in the club. They need leadership from somebody with the possible loss of Sundin and a journeyman winger who was a fan favourite of St. Louis might help.

Fletscher was asked this this morning and said that he expects the Leafs to have about 11 25 and under players on the roster next year and wanted a physical veteran guy with locker room leadership who can teach the kids how to be a professional, fight for the puck, etc. etc.

Was trying to add the numbers in terms of which Leafs in roster contention are 25 and under:

F: Boyce, Kulemin, Stajan (unsigned RFA), Steen, Tlusty, Wellwood (unsigned RFA), Williams (if he makes the team)

D: Stralman, White. Colaiacovo turns 26 in January.

    G: Pogge.

That\'s 10 including Stajan and Wellwood and excluding Colaiacovo. Meaning they are hoping to draft someone who is ready now.

tough to analyze the first of many moves for the Leafs until the dust this summer settles.

Mayers is a solid role player, and that is it.

This is just weird. Nothing against Mayers, he\'s a nice third line player, but a third rounder, especially a LOW first rounder, ...or any third rounder in the deepest draft in years, for a third line mucker, when you\'re at the begining of a rebuilding project just doesnt make sense!!! :S

First of all they have young players to fill that role. They\'re also only 10 days from free agency where they could have had their choice of literally dozens of third line good citizens who would have come to Toronto. If he thinks he needs leadership fine, I\'m sure Mayers is a good guy in the room, but it\'s not like he\'s Mark Messier for cryin out loud!

Lastly, I can\'t see any team giving up a third round pick for Mayers , ...unless it was a trade deadline deal and it was the Red Wings or somebody picking him up to fill a hole in a sellers market...

But, this is a BUYERS market!!!

The only way this would make sense is if it were reversed...

If Toronto had TRADED Mayers to STL and gotten a third or fourth round pick for him, we would be congratulating Fletcher on getting something for nothing.

As it stands though, it looks like he turned something into nothing!
