He obviously mis-read NHL as NBA and took a stab in the dark at a top assist player in the NBA. Stockton might have been a better guess, but since it was only a 400 point clue in Double Jeopardy I could see how, if he didn't read the question properly (like it was clear he didn't) he'd throw out a super common NBA star name who also was top 5 in career assists.
