I'll be the Bumgarner side of the argument here.
I'd lean to owning Bumgarner just because he's proven to be the more reliable pitcher, a workhorse, plus he's a year younger.
WHIP and ERA are stalemates to me
Wins are a toss up to predict so another stalemate
That leaves Strikeouts...
Strasburg; 197 Ks in 160 innings and 191 Ks in 183 innings the last 2 years.
Bumgarner; 191 Ks, 191 Ks, and 199 Ks the last 3 years with a 204 inning average.
Strasburg obviously has the higher K potential, but if he's only going to pitch around 180 innings every year he's not really going to provide that large amount of strikeouts everyone wants.
I'm a big fan of reliable pitching and Strasburg's injuries and flare ups throughout the last few seasons are definitely a worry. Sure he's the flashier of the two and if he ever does hit 200+ innings he will provide 230+ strikeouts but I like the workhorse Bumgarner every so slightly between the two because I know what I'm going to get ever year.
Can't really go wrong with either guy in this match up though. Unless you have a severe man crush on either guy I can't really see a reason for dealing here straight up.
Guess the risk is higher with Stras but its not enough for me to pull the trigger on this deal
Bumgarner for me - and if it means you can pry a little more from the owner that wants Strasburg, you have to at least see how much more he'll offer.
