Showdown in the City of Good Neighbours
Ryan Miller and Craig Anderson were lights out in Ottawa's first game of the season. A young Buffalo crew threw 35 unsuccessful shots at Craig Anderson while the Senators scored one goal on 46 shots against Ryan Miller. Both goalies combined an amazing .987 save percentage saving 80 out of 81 shots.
Evander Kane
Kane recorded the first Gordie Howe Hattrick of the season with a goal, two assists to Devin Setoguchi goals, and a fight against Colin Fraser. Kane totalled 3 points, +3, and 9 PIM. Owners of Kane may have creamed a little looking at his statistics from the day.
Semyon Varlamov
After stopping 35 shots in a 6-1 win against Anaheim, Varlamov continued his dominance in Colorado against the Nashville Predators. Varlamov stopped 26 of 27 shots and has allowed only two goals on 63 shots. With Patrick Roy at the helm in Colorado and Francois Allaire taking over as the goalie coach, Varlamov can become one of the most dominant goalies in the NHL. He currently holds a save percentage of .968.
Michael Grabner
Grabner had a solid debut with two goals and an assist against New Jersey on 4 shots. He played 14:43 with nine seconds on the powerplay. If he can continue this production, he can be that fantasy sleeper that everybody expects yearly from him.
The Colorado Avalanche
As a young team full of promising players, the Colorado Avalanche's play to start the season has been nothing short of dominant. 2013's first round pick Nathan MacKinnon has three points in his first two games as a member of the Avs and should continue to dominate. With a shallow defensive corps, Varlamov has been picking up the slack in allowing only two goals in 120 minutes of ice time.
Duds
Steve Downie
Steve Downie seems to have forgotten his anger management once entering the Pepsi Center Friday night. He gained 10 PIM and made some questionable moves playing against the Predators. Leaving the feet on a charging call (similar to the Dean McAmmond hit), Roman Josi prevented injury, and after being put into the net by Victor Bartley, Downie's notorious short fuse went off.
Not Quick Enough
After a promising run to the Western Conference Finals, the LA Kings look to repeat as candidates to push for another Stanley Cup. Unfortunately tonight, Jonathan Quick did not come out ready to play. Allowing 4 goals on 27 shots, Quick was replaced at the 15 minute mark of the 3rd period. He finished with a .852 save percentage.
Martin Brodeur
With the recent loss of his father, Brodeur insisted to be ready for action in tonights game against the New York Islanders. Brodeur allowed three goals on 26 shots. While it is only the beginning of the season, neither Brodeur or Schneider have show whether or not the can handle the majority of an 82 game schedule.
The Buffalo Sabres Offence
The Sabres offence has been one of the worst so far in the NHL. Scoring only one goal on 20 shots in Detroit, the Sabres failed to score anything on Craig Anderson with 35 shots on net. While they significantly produced more offensive numbers in the shooting department, the outcome was worse with an Anderson shutout.
