It's hard to make the argument that from a developmental point of view you are better off to play as an 18 year old.
The number of non-#1 picks that played in their draft year and turned into top 20 scorers is actually very small. According to my list, it's basically Jagr, Staal and Kessel. Also, because of the lockout, Malkin and Ovechkin didn't play in their draft years (Malkin didn't play the year after either), and it's hard to argue that the extra year of prep hurt their development.
Toews, Backstrom, Bobby Ryan, Kopitar, Ovechkin, Malkin, Carter, Parise, Getzlaf, Perry, Spezza, Heatley, the Sedins, Zetterberg, Datsyuk, Iginla, Sakic all didn't play in their draft years.
Only time will tell, but I'm guessing the people that are complaining loudest are the people that invested a high pick, and not the people that are concerned with long-term player development.
