there seems like a lot of options for goalies, id probably drop both goalies.
Second team in my signature.
I'm thinking about not keeping any goalies this year due to my draft position and the assumption everyone else will keep two goalies. This should allow me to keep more talent in the skater categories, since my goalies aren't tier 1 or 2 guys. Am I crazy?
- 10 player keeper (max 2 goalies)
- 4th year of the league
- every team has kept two goalies in previous seasons
- I pick third in a non-snaking draft
- 1st and 2nd overall picks are owned by the same manager, who will keep at least one goalie (his goalies from last year are Howard, Reimer and Varlamov)
- I have Markstrom and Allen on my farm team, who could be called up in a pinch
Without goalies, my projected keepers would be:
Malkin (C/RW)
Giroux (C/RW)
Parise (LW)
Karlsson (D)
Eberle (RW)
Vanek (LW/RW)
Benn (LW)
Eriksson (LW/RW)
Keith (D)
B. Richards (C)
If I kept at least one goalie, it would be either Fleury or Backstrom, and I would likely remove Richards or Keith from my list of keepers.
Available goalies for the draft (based on who I think the other managers will be keeping):
Mike Smith
Ryan Miller
Niklas Backstrom
Marc-Andre Fleury
Tomas Vokoun
Jaroslav Halak
Brian Elliott
Martin Brodeur
Ben Bishop
Cam Ward
Devan Dubnyk
Ray Emery
Steve Mason
Jonas Hiller
Ondrej Pavelec
Jonathan Bernier
James Reimer
Semyon Varlamov
Jean-Sebastien Giguere
Evgeni Nabokov
Karri Ramo
Michal Neuvirth
Dan Ellis
Jhonas Enroth
Thanks in advance for your opinions.

Who would be available at the forward and D positions?
In an 8 team league, both Keith and B. Richards, even Erikkson are pretty marginal keepers.
You would be putting back in two top 5 redraft goalies. If the 3 above are top 5-10 at thier position as well then I drop the goalies, if not I probably keep the goalie(s) and drop the players.

Excellent point david. It looks like I need to go through the other team's lineups and take a shot at picking out who I think each team will keep and then identifying where my marginal players fall into the list of available players.
By not keeping goalies, I'm taking the chance that since the other teams already have at least 2 goalies on their team, they won't be targetting goalies early, so i'll be able to get the same level of goalies in later rounds, while keeping skaters and drafting skaters early....
That's a pretty decent plan, but who is to say that your other league mates don't have the same plan?
Keep Niklas Backstrom over Brad Richards and go from there.
"Be yourself; everyone else is already taken."
"Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle."
I don't think they'll have the same plan since they're goalies are better than mine. From last season, these are the goalies each team owns, so I think most will keep 2.

I am not MAF's biggest fan, but he is going to post wins with the mighty Pens and would be a good goalie to keep for that reason only. I also wondered about dropping Timonen instead of Keith (if you do keep a goalie) as the 39 year old d-man gets pushed out to pasture by young Philly d-men like Gustaffson & Bourdon and newly acquired Streit.

I would definitely not keep Richards. He is extremely dratfble/replaceable. Keep either MAF or Backstrom instead
I only just noticed you already planned on dropping Timonen. My eyes are failing me as I get older and I thought "Eriksson" was "Timonen" in your list of who you'd keep. Sorry about that. Given your original choice is between Richards or Keith, I would keep Richards. As good as Keith is in his position, I think Richards will have a big rebound year under new coach Vignault. It is hard to access this properly without knowing what other d-men would be available to replace Keith, but you do have Karlsson who almost makes up for any lost d-men you may incur. Sorry again about my poor eyesight!!!

Drop the goalies. You should easily get back what you have already dropped. I would look for Pavelec to have a decent year moving to the lower scoring central division vs. the high scoring East.

Either drop Richards to keep one of your goalies, or also drop Keith to keep both of them. I'd keep both of them. Without at least 2 goalies like them, you're going to be struggling in W & GAA - much moreso than either of those skaters will be difference makers in your skater categories.
Hope you can pick up a guy like Halak/Elliott/Bernier/Vokoun/Emery/etc a few rounds into the draft.
EDIT - you think Hiller will not be kept? Definitely jump on that if that's the case.

I would keep Fleury over Richards.
I understand the idea of letting your goalies so but if it's for keeping a guy like Brad Richards, it's just not worth it. Some expect him to rebound but a lot still believe his best years are behind.
Plus, you just never know what other owners will do.
