Draft strategy-following the crowd

I own 2 first round picks and then I skip a round, so my question is do you follow the crowd if there starts to be a run at a position/group of players?

My picks are at 6 and 8 in a 12 man league, and given that its a limited keeper, I expect some pretty good players to be available. My plan was to try to start a run either on D or prospects that would hopefully carry through the next round when I don't have a pick.

I don't have positional requirements, other than F, D, G. So I'm not sure how qualified I am to weigh in here. That said, I would find it very tough using early first round picks on anything other than best player available. And by best player available, I mean taking into account scarcity of position. If it works out that both picks happen to be similar players, so be it.

But drafting in a manner than you hope will influence other people's picks...I'm not a fan of that. I'm pretty sure I'd end up regretting my picks if I used that as my strategy.

1. If it's Yahoo, you should adjust your players.
Ovechkin is now RW-only.
Benn is LW-only. I think that gives you 3LW with Marchand and MaxPac.
And you have OV/Kessel, which sets you at RW.

Center is deep, especially with dual eligibility.

I would look to get an elite D.
Karlsson/Letang/Subban are leagues above the other defensemen in multi-cat.
Weber/Byfuglien/Chara are in that next tier.
Suter/Phaneuf probably next tier.

If you don't already know the story of Brent Burns, he is RW/D in Yahoo...but as a potential 55pt scorer (as an actual wing), you can slot him at D as an ELITE defenseman, part of the Weber/Byfuglien/Chara group.

Burns is Yahoo 238.
You can probably get Burns in the 3rd/4th round... but somebody else also probably knows about him (if he's not already deemed a "keeper").

If you got two defense from above + Burns (3rd/4th round), your team would be set for a run at the championsip, I think.

Get a 2nd/3rd goalie in rounds 4/5.

Good advice Pengwin but im also in the league and will pick Burns withyhe last pick in the second round at worst (since I don't own a 3rd or 4th rounder).

Thanks Pengwin. I spent last season basically rebuilding most of my team to try to Compete with the defending champ, and feel I'm in a good position now. I expect most of the elite D will be kept, but I know the Subban owner isn't a big fan, and loves Benn, so I will probably offer Benn for him to fill that, and then potentially grab Burns round 1 to get him before my brother (the defending champ).
