    Default Cody Franson

My 12th keeper spot comes down to Cody Franson or Ray Whitney. Franson was a deadline acquisition last year at a fairly hefty price, and I am always a bit reluctant to let go of guys I paid a lot for.

If he can pull 40 points this year, while averaging similar hits per game numbers, he's probably worth my while, since I really hate having gaping holes on D.

What worries me though, is this whole contract mess, where Nonis believes he can sign Kadri and Franson for $5 million combined. What do you see coming of that? Trade? Holdout followed by a prolonged sulk? Or will Franson be signed in time for training camp. Trying to decide if I am more comfortable with all those questions, or the question of whether Whitney's ancient form can still be transformed to Mumm-Ra the Everliving for one more season of greatness.

    What do you think?

I would keep Franson, but in the future never overpay for D. D are replaceable, don't give up assets for them. Especially not marginal ones. Pay for Karlsson/Subban/Letang, and nobody else.

What you paid for Franson last year is irrelevant to the discussion, you simply have to determine if you would rather keep him or Whitney and I don't think it's all that close - I too would keep Franson.

If you have a hits catagory i keep Franson. He's turned into a 2 hit per game dman and he's probably around 30 points min. I dont feel he'll be unsigned on game day.

When I am taking a run at the title I overpay for pretty much whatever I need to in order to fill a hole in my roster. I had two D slots that weren't producing, and so I got two productive D men to fill those slots. In H2H even a slight upgrade can be the difference between losing a playoff round by one hit, or one assist, and had I kept Fowler in Franson's spot, that might well have happened to me. As it was I lost by one category in the final, but it was a good run, and worth buying a couple of d men for.

    No love for OEL

All jokes aside, Franson is your guy. I doubt he will be in a Leaf uniform this year unless Nonis can move someone but I have very little faith in Whitney. Bet you can scoop him off the wire early in the season if need be.

Sounds good. Thanks for the input everyone. I am trying to work a pre-deadline trade or two, which may or may not bump Franson out of keeper consideration, but I will definitely take your votes of confidence into account.

Keep Franson that's fine...assuming he plays for the Leafs this season. Wouldn't say he's a lock for 40 points though.

    Whitney is a fossil.
