Default (Help ASAP) Doughty for Edler and 4th overall pick this year?

I am contemplating a deal - MY Drew Doughty for HIS Alex Edler and the 4th overall pick (would be Lindholm/Barkov/Nichushkin). Scoring format in sig.

Doughty has slowed down but is still a franchise D-Man with HUGE offensive upside. He's only 23 compared to Edler's 27. Edler is hitting his prime as a D-Man and the sweetener of the 4th is intriguing.

I would appreciate all feedback as quick as possible, thanks gents!

    No cap? No deal!

I would not make that deal for the exact reasons that you listed. The 4th overall is tempting, but that is why it was included in the deal.

Doughty had a couple of sub par seasons in contrast to his numbers from 2-3 years ago, but he has not slowed down. He is far from his prime years so I would hold onto him.

This is a tough one, but I agree with Bass56 - Doughty's upside is huge and he's still only 23. I wouldn't blame you for taking it at all, the pick could pay off huge but I would personally stand pat.

No hits, no blocks, no PIM....... No deal. I would have taken it in a full multi cat league. But not close for me in this one.

I wouldn't make that deal either. The difference between Doughty and Edler is more than the 4th overall pick, imo, even with Doughty's more modest numbers over the last few years.

This is a fair offer for Doughty but I dont think your team will be better for making the trade. I would hold off and look for more of a return.

One more thing to consider is Vancouver is going to ahve a new coach next season. How much is that going to be a factor? They might play more of a defensive system and Edlers's number could take a hit. Edler isnt going to go up he will only go down. Doughty can still go up.

If your league is mainly pts only and has a farm system that you can hide prospects in, then I would actually do the deal to acquire Edler and the pick. Doughty is the better defenceman but pts only, I don't see much of a gap, and definitely don't see more than a 20pt difference under the most extreme situations. I'd do the deal soley for getting that pick, especially if there's an outside chance that prospect becomes a PPG forward in 5 yrs then you win big down the road.

When starting 6, with a with lineup of 8 that looks like this:

"Karlsson, P.Subban, Pietrangelo, Shattenkirk, Doughty, Yandle, Chara, Kronwall.."

The difference between Edler to Doughty isn't big.. Keep Doughty and count on him potentially stepping up to a more offensive role in the future!

I like it. You give up a few years in age between the two, but it wouldn't suprise me at all to see Edler out goal and outpoint Doughty in each and every year for the foreseeable future. Doughty is a big gamble right now becasue he could break out again offensively, but I think the chances of him ever breaking 50 again in LA are pretty slim - at least with the current roster and philosophy behind it. They are wining with their current approach, so why would they change. Edler has a far better situation than Doughty does in LA and even if Edler gets moved, chances are that he will land somewhere better than LA (for fantasy purposes). Add in the fact that you wll get an elite prospect at number four, and I would do the deal.

As I like Doughty, i will do this deal. Doughty have more upside then Edler but, I really think he would outpoint him by 10 at most. You get Barkov or Nichushkin with this deal so I will take that gamble.

Points only I'd make this deal. With your starting 6 you've got a bit of room to move some defensemen. The drop from Doughty to Edler in a points only isn't incredible, especially if Doughty continues to put so much focus on defense, so I don't think you are losing that much (if anything at all) for the next couple of years. The chance to add a high end prospect makes it worth while for me.

i'll take the other approach to this and say, because you're so stacked at D you can afford to take a gamble by taking the 4th pick and hoping it turns out.. in the mean time, going from doughty to edler is not going to be that great of a difference (heck, edler could still outpoint doughty - then its a win win)

Thanks fellas, I'm still mulling this one over. It seems as if it's split here. Solid points made by everyone so far - considering all options.

Here are the 3 things weighing on me the most:

    1. Doughty is only 23. Does he pull a "Niedermayer" and once he hits 25-26 (approaching peak) he delivers a steady dose of 48-56 points? Nieds was solid and good, but it wasn't until he hit his 26+ peak did he fully blossom offensively. Nieds also played on "defensive-minded" teams in NJ and ANA. Other players like Pronger, Schneider, Desjardins, Rafalski followed this similar pattern of production. Doughty just has so much offensive skill and logs big minutes to continually stay -45 points IMO. He is a better player than Edler, including offensively IMO.

    2. The new coach in VAN. How does this impact Edler's production? Does it go up or down? Also, what if big changes are made in VAN? Different players, different schemes, etc? There are definitely "unknowns" with the Canucks heading into next season and beyond.

    3. What if Barkov/Lindholm/Nichushkin DO turn into PPG players? I already pick at 5 so I will get ONE of these kids regardless, but if I make the trade, I would get TWO of them. If I don't make the trade, end up losing out on Barkov and he becomes a 75-80 point stud in 3 years, will I regret NOT making this deal if the difference between Doughty/Edler is say 10 points max (maybe 20 pool points)?

I really appreciate the feedback and help in flushing this one out.

In a points only fantasy league I don't see the difference between these two D as being enough to keep Doughty considering the 4th overall pick is in play.

Will DD pick up his scoring going into his prime? Yes, a bit.
Will Edler lose points under a new coach? Maybe, but I doubt it.
Will they score at a similar pace over the next 4-5 seasons? I believe so.
Is a player like Barkov be enough to make the deal happen? You bet he is.

Personally, I don't see the prospects you'll pick at #4 sliding into your starting roster.
    So, it's Doughty vs. Edler.

    It's actually a toss-up.
Points-wise, I value these guys almost the same.

You could go either way here.

In the next 6 years, I'd guess that Edler will have a higher point total in 3 and Doughty will have a higher point total in 3.

If you draft after the NHL draft, you may be able to pick the prospect with the right environment to succeed... but again... I think it's 4 years out before any of those guys crack your top 13F.
