Those saying they turned off a movie after watching it for 10 whole minutes missed a good one in Book of Eli.

I watched it for half an hour - that was enough for me. It shouldn't take longer than that and I was able to get a sense of it with its cheesy acting, forced tension and attempts to be overly dramatic. Of course one's view of quality is entirely that - opinion.

About The Conjuring... isn't that about driving bad spirits/demons away? Like an exorcism? Conjuring is when you call spirits/demons/whatever to a place. So isn't the title the complete opposite of what the movie is about?

Actually, I thought the Conjuring was solid. Saw it last night - give it a 7/10 which isn't shabby for a horror flick. Good cast and well-produced.

Here is one of the last 5 movies you should watch. Its 7 minutes.

So myself and a bunch of guys, including Dobberhockey Hall of Famer Peter Belanger, made a movie for the 48 Hour Film project. Rather than explain all the details, go read here:

    http://www.48hourfilm.com/en/detroit/

We are given 48 hours to make a film with a specific Character, Prop, Line of Dialog and a random genre.

Check out our movie. We won Best Picture, Best Editing, Audience Choice and Best Horror Film.

    Character: Kevin Boothbay
    Prop: Map
Dialog: "Please be careful. That's the last one."

    Enjoy.

    Bumped ^

Mud and The Perks of being a wallflower are still on my shortlist.

Has anyone seen the movie the place beyond the pines? Looks solid too.

I just watched Only God Forgives, and that was one of the worst films I've seen in a long time. It dragged, it had so many scenes that were done really, really slowly (e.g. someone takes about a minute to turn their head), Ryan Gosling was quite useless as a main actor in this film (I wouldn't say he 'starred' in it at all, heck he didn't even say much), and the violence was done for the sake of violence. Perhaps it suits some tastes, but not mine.

The place beyond the pines. 6/10

Really three shorter movies in one. Liked the first 50 mins, then got bored. The trailer is misleading and makes it look more action packed than it really is. The trailer focusses on the first 50 mins only and little on the last 1h +.

Rotten tomatoes and IMDb has this movie vastly overrated. Next!

Haven't really watched that many movies since I last posted here. I've watched House of Cards and the first season of Game of Thrones though and they're fantastic. The four movies I've watched are...

The Canyons - 1/5 - The Lindsay Lohan movie with the male pornstar trying to be an actual actor. Horrible horrible horrible. Bad script, weird editing, REALLY bad acting. I've been pondering if it could be considered a "so bad it's good" movie like The Room or Birdemic, but it's just boring. Only reason to watch it is Lindsay's knockers and they're not all that special.

Paranormal Activity 4 - 2/5 - Yeah, time to bury this concept now. I liked the first two, the third had the 80s nostalgia factor, but this one is just "meh".

Lovelace - 3/5 - Not exactly what I expected, but in a good way. Very good performances, especially by Amanda Seyfried, but I just didn't care enough about the story for the movie to have that extra something.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower - 5/5 - This one really struck a chord with me. At first it felt a bit pretentious, but then after the first 15-20 minutes it got to another level. Fantastic actors and a great script. Apparently the book is a lot darker, but the movie is also pretty dark. I'd recommend it to anyone who has ever been the weird kid in school and most people have felt like that at one point or another.

I just watched a movie called Blue Valentine. 3/5 stars.
Acting was good. (Gosling + Michelle Williams)
Overall story was a little bleh... didn't really go anywhere.
    Nothing interesting/clever.

They did a nice job covering a common society issue (a couple growing apart).
Gosling in the aviators & wife-beeter being a bit drunk reminds me of Cage's early days... that was probably the best part.

    Frozen River - 7.5/10

It's a slower-paced drama but really well written and acted. Kind of a poignant story centered around the lives of the working class poor and native Americans in northern NY/southern Canada.

Thanks for the heads up. I had that one kind of pegged for the 'so bad it is good' file but I think I'll skip it.

Hard to believe that 9 yrs after Mean Girls Lindsay is possibly the least attractive of the main female characters from that movie (and yes, I am totally including Tina Fey and Amy Poehler). Kinda sad to see.

Not that surprised that this movie sucked out loud.

However, for anyone interested, here is an article from the New York Times that describes the filming of The Canyons with our favorite train-wreck that is likely more interesting than the film itself.

Totally agree. I really enjoyed the first two, the third was average but decided to give it a mulligan when the fourth came out. I was wrong, and you used the right word: meh. That's it for me, but you can tell they're going to milk it for as long as possible.
