    Default ELC Question

I see a few teams signing their picks from the past draft to ELC. So that basically starts the clock on the 3 years for that contract.

Is this not a somewhat positive sign that they feel this season will be played? Because if there was a lockout the contract would still count a year wouldnt it?

I was reading an article (cant remember where) pointing out how the teams were more or less preparing, not making big signings etc before the last lockout that made it obvious that there was probably going to be one.

No, it doesn't start the three year clock until a player under 20 (or, in some rare cases, a bit older) plays in at least 10 pro games. So Galchenyuk can play 9 NHL games in 12/13 for the Habs and then get sent back to his junior team and the contract would slide to 13/14. Just for the sake of argument, if Gally plays no NHL games in 13/14, he could still be sent down to juniors and have the contract slide another year. There are also other games played limits that handle whether or not a contract year counts against future free agent eligibility and whatnot, but that 10 game limit is what you want to concentrate on right now. That's why you often see players being talked about as "he'll get a 9 game tryout and then get sent back to junior".
