Byfuglien Case Settles

For those owners who were worried that the trial might result in problems for Byfuglien, good news, his case has settled and won't affect his ability to travel, etc. Now he just has to avoid any dangerous situations during his one-year probation.

MINNEAPOLIS -- Winnipeg Jets defenceman Dustin Byfuglien has avoided a trial on drunken boating charges by pleading guilty to careless boating.

Byfuglien reached a plea deal on Monday, the day his trial was to start in Minneapolis.

Byfuglien was charged last August with boating under the influence and refusing to take a chemical test after an incident on suburban Lake Minnetonka. Careless boating is a misdemeanour, and Byfuglien was sentenced to a year's probation, two days of public service, a $1,000 fine and a day in an alcohol education program.

Defence attorney Mitchell Robinson says Byfuglien had a 0.031 blood-alcohol content when tested on the lake, well below Minnesota's limit for driving boats or cars.

No kidding, cops giving big Byf a hard time, stinks of racism frankly.

I don't know if I'd jump to the conclusion that there was a racial motivation...but the charges did seem pretty idiotic.

Of course, could also be a case of someone ticking off the marine cops with something like " Hey, this guys in the NHL man ! " They get defensive that way.

For sure there's no way of knowing, and not fair to assume there were any motivations based on race, but let's be real, in this American society a black man and a white man confronted doing the exact same thing, the black man is going to be more likely to be given a hard time, it's just the way it works. Racial profiling is EVERYWHERE.

I was with my kids walking back to our apartment from Central Park, and I stopped at the corner of Park Avenue and 85th. This dude is waiting for the red light next to me, relatively clean cut young kid of Puerto Rican descent, I would have assumed. He hails a cab coming by, the cab stops, looks out, sees that he's a black guy, and speeds off, So insulting, direcly in front of us, I ended up chatting with the guy and then explaining what happened to my kids, it was such an obvious thing.

So in Byfuglien's case, here's this wealthy black hockey player guy on his boat, he blows a 0.3 on the breathalyzer, he was stopped in the first place merely because he had a non-functioning back light on his boat or something technical like that, and he ends up having to go through this? Ridiculous.
